A frame coupler question

Postby Juneaudave » Sat Jul 15, 2006 11:11 am

Should I weld on the coupler? Or bolt on...or does it matter? The coupler I have is a 2" 5000 lb deal...fairly stout. Tubing is 2" box x 1/8 thickness.

Weld it is!!! The coupler came painted all purty and I was wondering why they did that if your just going to muss it all up (particularly in my case) by welding it. Half a dozen of one, half a dozen of another, I guess...Juneaudave

I used to weld them on! Had a coupler fail it took some major work to replace it.
Now I use grade 8 bolts, lock washer’s, nuts and I use Loctite 271 threadlocker.

I've bolted mine on

Postby brian_nj2006 » Tue Jul 18, 2006 8:30 pm

i bolted mine on because unfortunalaly <sp> I have accidently backed into them with enough force that I have had to change them. Welded on it is a pain in the neck to cut all those welds to get it off.

Easier to replace if it's bolted on. Doesn't hurt to weld it, if that's what you like.
Don't weld "around" the frame tubing, if you know what I mean. Maybe I should say, weld the joints that go from the front of the trailer, towards the rear. Not the verticals.

Weld it, then run a bolt through it for the safety chains. Sort of the belts and suspenders idea. :D
