Help with AutoDesk Inventor??

Postby Steve Frederick » Sun Feb 18, 2007 3:53 pm

My son is taking design courses at college. He has a student version, (a license from the school) of Auto Desk Inventor. We got it activated..I think!!
When an attempt to open a file is made, the program closes! I'm thinking that there may be a helper program, or file service that has to run in the background?? Anyone here familiar??
I'm still doing my designs on graph paper or Visio!!
CAD has always scared me

To run Inventor you need to initialize FlexLM and leave it running in the background while you start Inventor.

Got a disk with " Vault Client"
and "Data Management Server"
Looked for FlexLM, where would it be on the computer?

FlexLM has to be setup after you install Inventor. It should be on one of the CD's that came with Inventor.

When you find it, and run it, it'll look something like this...

No files mentioning FlexLM on any of the 4 CD's!
Just "Vault", which seems to be a database engine for networks.
It does mention Internet Information Services though!

Vault is a PDM (Product Data Management) package.

We can only assume two things here...

1) The student version doesn't need FlexLM, in which case your copy of Inventor should run. Did you reboot the machine after you installed it?

2) If the student version needs flexLM then you are missing a CD, or you missed a step when installing the program. You might want to try to reinstall the program keeping an eye out for the FlexLM portion of the program...

Mike...

P.S. I'll search the web and see if I can find anything else.

I'm thinking of the re-install!
I didn't install it the first time..just handed the ball as Lyn was heading for work!!
It's botched now, a re-install can't hurt?? Right?

I attempted a re-install, but I'm running a repair first!
Thanks for the help so-far! I guess I'm not gonna get out to the shop today

Sounds like there is a more serious problem.

Can you try it on another computer? If it works there, the first computer might need wiping.

It could also be defective CDs, in which case you'd have to get replacements CDs. Then again, it might just be the CD drive, in which case it might install just fine on a second computer.

Steve,

Does the program have it's own uninstall program?? If so, it should be on the 'Start' menu and would work better than the 'Add/Remove' in the control panel.

You may want to go to their website and see if there are instructions to 'Manually' uninstall the program.

If all else fails, you can come down to visit me and I will get it fixed for you!! (We have alot less snow right now)!!!! :)

Here is a simple suggestion, does your computer meet the minimum requirements?
