Mog Fest Spring 2015

Postby KCStudly » Tue May 19, 2015 8:32 pm

I was very fortunate to have been invited to the Spring Mog Fest in Monson, Mass this past weekend.

There was camping and a pig roast, and lots of cool Unimogs, Pinzguaers, a couple of 4wd VW campers and one very capable (stock) Jeep Rubicon.

See the full report in this post in my TPCE build.

Dunno, The Jeep has a nice form fit seat and I can tell you I got a few good kidney punches from being jostled around. If I got the seat in just the right spot so that I could brace my legs in the foot well, pushing my lower back into the lumbar with out too much reach to the dash mounted hand grab rail, and leaning forward a little so that the hits staid away from my upper back and head, I did okay.

The Unimogs are actually kind of funny. The tires and wheels are so big and the portal axles push everything up, so what looks like a big cab is really kind of short sitting above the frame. The seats are maybe only 8 inches above the floors, and the foot wells are straight forward and pushed out narrowly to the sides of the engine house. Seats didn't look, too bad though.

The Pinzguaers were a whole other story. They all had very military looking flat bottom and backed seats with very little cushion apparent. In the rear the benches faced each other, which didn't seem good for hardcore wheeling, BUT, no one looked to be flopping around, or complained of being uncomfortable. At least not that I heard. They had so much more ground clearance, bigger tires and big coil springs that they just seemed to pussy foot over the obstacles. A large boulder becomes a much smaller stone.

Priorities of war:

1. Destroy the enemy.
2. Don't get destroyed.

Usually "Enjoy the trip" doesn't make the list. :D

Actually, on the green one with front and rear winches and brush guards, the owner said he bought his tires from a guy that had used them on a rubber tired crane; said they are 7 ply side walls and there is no point in running them below 70 psi because they don't flex any better when aired down. :o

Doesn't matter too much tho, with such a large diameter and so much ground contact, they pretty much go anywhere.

So it was. I did not know that.

Coincidentally, there was a sportsmen club near the gathering location and we could hear rapid gun fire, and what sounded like a bona fide cannon going off just before supper.

:D :R

Sounds like someone forgot their earplugs that day, then, and couldn't hear the dinner bell.
