Trying my hand at this teardrop thing

Postby Sammit » Thu May 30, 2013 6:30 pm

Hey all,

Name is Sam, and I've just started up a trailer build from scratch. I'm in Austin, TX and I'm hoping to finish in time to get some fall camping done with my wife and 15mo old. I'm an Eagle Scout, so I've done a good bit of tent camping in the Texas area, but am hoping to stretch beyond that.

I started my build with the HFT 4x8' utility trailer, and I'm working on the bed now. I plan to make it look like a hobbit hole, with astroturf on top and a big circle door, something like this: Image
I haven't run into any roadblocks yet, but I'm sure I'll have questions soon!

Welcome to the forum Sammit.

Bonnie, in the Foamie section, has a similar build, to
your proposed build, going on now. She's built the round door
and is adapting a previously built Foamie to her needs.
Here's a link to her thread:

Your kiddies should love going camping in a Hovering
[It'll be above the ground] Hobbit Home !

Have fun planning and building, and of course, pics are
"de rigueur" [Had to look how to spell that one up !].

Cheers,

Mezmo, thanks for the link! I'm still a ways from needing to tackle the door, but that thread will be a great help.
I didn't think of using a galley latch for the centered door knob!

Welcome to the forum, a Hobbit Hole is a new concept for this old timer. Good luck on your proposed build, but only one question, how do you keep the sod on the roof while roaring down the interstate? Now that is really thinking out of the box, my favorite way to think, by the way.
:? 8) Roly ~~

It'd be nice to have actual sod, but I'll be using a mossy artificial grass. Still shopping around for that, since most of them only come in rolls of 15' wide

Our local hardware store has a roll of artificial green (in the camping section) about three or four feet wide for outdoor runners. Cut to length. So it`s around. Can't wait to see this built;)

Hi Sammit,

Check out this tiny house's building method/design.
It may be useful to you in your build.
