Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Hi Irrowe,
18" is not too bad and as you mentioned and depending on the shape of the TV and that of the CT, a wing may not offer much gain ... take the trailer out and see what it does and handles. I suggest that you run a baseline with the TV before hook-up and again after; this will give you a baseline for whatever you change. If a vehicle is running a wing/wind deflector and there is nothing behind, i.e., the trailer is not hooked up, the deflector will create additional drag and can reduce mileage. :(

Regarding the trailer, if you are close to 6' or taller, you will love the added 6" interior height, especially at the door ... my buddy's Wells Cargo with 6' height leaves you with about 5-1/2' door and it really connects with the forehead :O

I am looking forward to more posts and to see what looks/and changes take place :pictures: :pictures:

Good luck... 8)
Happy Camping & Building,
John (JC)

Thanks John,
I am absorbing all the info I can get now so when the CT comes in, the thinking/designing process will already be done. Well almost done as I know there will be a ton of changes.

I will do the baseline test to see what will go against me. As I may have mentioned before, I run with a tonneau cover now on a F150. If I left it that way, I believe that I will get more resistance from the front of the CT then if I put a full cap on the back of it. I have no documented proof of this belief, but my intuition tells me so.

I have been pricing caps recently and the ones I like have gotten extremely expensive. Over $2000 for what I paid only $1000 for my 2000 Tundra. I was not prepared for that. Now I have to convince my wife that it is a good buy and that could delay some "add on's" for the trailer.

Hi Bob,
I have to laugh when I read your comment ... I am absorbing all the info I can get now so when the CT comes in, the thinking/designing process will already be done. Well almost done as I know there will be a ton of changes.

If you haven't already, take a look at my gallery ... I did all the planning and drawings, and when the smoke cleared and the trailer arrived, there was one major miss ... I put in a narrower door (28" in lieu of the std. 32"), I had them move the door forward for additional bunk room, I had an RV screen door installed, and the list goes on, BUT I failed to install a window in the door!! :x

It is difficult to see out of the door or even see what/who is at the door and now, I need to install a window in the door ... I guess this is a good winter project, if I can find a warm spot to work
Happy Camping & Building,
John (JC)

I too had the door positioned so as to allow for cabinets in the front. After reading even another post recently, the poster commented that he does not need the standard cabinet width and going with less, provides more room to move around. That is a good point. Oh well, I am not going to worry about that one. The door is going to stay where it is planned.

I am going to put a door window in too. And it may not make it in time for November when I want to take it to the woods. So it will be a winter project for me. I am probably going to order windows in a week or two. Maybe I can let you know what kind of window I am going to use and vice versa. Maybe one of has chosen the better option. I did confirm that mine will be a solid core one.

John,
As of right now, this is the window that I am looking at for the door.

The window looks great and the price is reasonable  I think I am going to look for a small vertical slider for my door ... I think that's what I want

I have pushed most of the trailer work back due to overload ... I am trying to get the garage finished before winter sets in and still need to finish the wiring (110 & 220), get the walls and ceiling insulated and covered, and get my shop set up :?

I just picked up a 50,000 BTU heater for the garage and a 220 volt MIG/FCAW welder (I have been without a welder for a while and finally bit the bullet and bought another one) to finish projects around the house ... trailer bunks, spare tire carrier, generator mount, prospecting stuff, and, and, the list goes on

AND, if that is not enough, I HAVE to get out ... I am planning and hope to make the "Dam" Gathering near Brainerd, MN in Oct and an impromptu camp-out some time in Sept (Yea, Getting out)

John,
Do you prefer John or JC?

I just found out that mine is coming with a window included in the RV door. That saves me some money. See this photo (that is not trailer I ordered though) .

I go by either or, my friends call me John and JC ... It doesn't matter to me.

That is nice that you do not have to worry with the window now and the trailer looks nice ... is yours a pointy nose? Wow, is this the same size as yours; the trailer looks so HUGE ... You probably have room for a master suite and a hot tub!!

I would have gone to a 12 footer if I had planned on the travel that it looks like I will be doing ... like the Tiny House show on TV, I guess mine is a small CT ... not tiny and not large 8)

Keep us posted on the build, I always look for ideas ... the Tiny House TV series comes up with some great space saving ideas that can be adapted to our world of smaller trailers ...

Oh, I wish I could handle and afford one like that. I used that photo just to show you the door. I ordered one like this:
http://www.carmate-trailers.com/new_veh ... lYear=2014

It is 6x14 flat front and silver in color. I wanted the VNose build on this frame, but I did not want the extra $500 or about that premium. I will have to check out the Tiny House thing on TV. Thanks.

Is that TV series called "Tiny House Nation"? If so, I found it. Starting this coming Monday night on channel 119 FYI on Dish Network

That's it... They are building houses less than 500 square feet and most seem to fall into the 200 - 300 sf range! I programmed it to record each week and get a kick out of their ideas --- some are on wheels and pull like a trailer 8)

I like your trailer and with 14 feet ... a bit of planning should give you a great living/camping space!! Keep us posted... :pictures:

Hi Hank,
Great to hear from you!! :shake hands: :shake hands:

You are absolutely correct; I'll need to take a couple of pics the next time I hook up! :pictures:

I put a pic in my gallery of the wing on the truck, but never loaded any with the trailer ... thank you reminding me :applause:

How's that new trailer of yours doing; I think the last I heard, you had picked it up, headed to NM, and were on your way to CO (I think)? It was a 14 footer, wasn't it! I have been slipping and not been keeping up it ... my apologies!

AZ_Desert_Rat, Howdy;

Yep got a 6X14 footer, back home in sunny and warm N.M. Had
gone to Mt. to meet some folks from another forum and do some
fly fishin'. did that back home went to Phoenix, and had a short block
in-frame overhaul done to the engine at BulletProof Eng. now licking
the gaping wounds in wallet. CT is acting as temp. storage while wallet
recovers. Will most likely get to work on it in Dec. or Jan. I ain't made of $'s
like some folks so I do what I can when I can.
Lookin' forword to the new pix.

I am glad you are doing okay and got your trailer home ... I am sorry to here about the engine O/H and glad that all is well!! I am keeping my fingers crossed because mine is a 1991 with over 250K on it and never had any engine work done... :worship:

Take care Hank and keep in touch... 8)
