I did the lift the recommended way from Wells Cargo. The stock axle is a torsion spring axle. Wells Cargo sent me two 18" long pieces of 2"x4" steel tube and had them welded between the frame and the axle mounts. After looking at it with the wheels off, I realized a better approach would have been to swap the axle. The stock axle is 22 1/2 degrees negative. I could have swapped it for a 22 1/2 degrees positive axle with brakes for not that much more than the riser tube method. If I was doing it again, I would have done it that way, and ordered a lighter spring rate, also.

It is a Utah plate. I am in St. George. Howdy, neighbor!

Yes, I see some evidence of influence there. Nice looking setup! How is the inside?

I lived in Aumsville for 8 years. Loved it there. Now, I'm down south in St. George, Utah. I will be headed north for vacation in a few weeks, though.

Nice write up!

Postby Taco Jeff » Thu Jul 28, 2011 9:04 pm

Gil, after seeing your write up in Four Wheeler magazine,(congrats) I have decided to go to a 5X10 vs a 6X10. 5X8 is too small for what I have in mind. My question for you is about the V nose. Have you ever touched the top of the trailer to the back of the Jeep when you go through a deep dip while off roading? I think we four wheel around the same areas.
Thanks.
Jeff

Back Country Camping

Postby SteveB » Tue Aug 02, 2011 1:58 pm

I too plan to use my 5x8 for back country camping. I will use it as a base camp since my suspension is not good enough for anything other than fairly smooth dirt roads.

Thanks Jeff

Actually, it is in the September Issue of 4 Wheel Drive (not Four Wheeler) Magazine.

I've never had a problem with the top of the trailer hitting the back of the Jeep. The fixed trailer nose jack is the closest thing to the spare on the back of the Jeep and it hasn't hit. I was planning on putting on a flip-up if it ever hit the spare, but not a problem yet.

By the way... This trailer is FOR SALE!!! I bought a pop-up camper and a boat. No more room to store the trailer, so it (sniff, sniff) needs to go to a good home.

Just come across your thread ........ good trailer.

I would add one comment, why do most narrow CT have the bed 'front-back' ....... they can be made to fit 'side-side' ....... if you stretch the side.

The side door would have made a good 'slide-out' panel.

See my link below. This makes much better use of the barn doors. (I think)

Mine is made from a 8x4. when both slide-out are open the CT is wider than it is long.

Here are some links to the initial build....

I hope this helps some others.
