Roof Treatment?

Do you'all coat/treat the roof of your cargo trailer? If with what?

The roof should be either galvanized steel or aluminum. Either way it doesn't really need any thing for it to stand up to the elements. Thats one of the advantages of a cargo trailer vs a travel trailer. Me and some others on here have painted our roofs white though to help with heat. Lowes and homedepot both sell white roof paint for metal roofs. Its located over by the roof sealers and shingles. It does a great job at reflecting heat from the sun and lowering the inside temps.

That stuff thats put on trailer houses, cool seal, or something like it, your thoughts on that?

DO NOT USE KOOL SEAL! Kool Seal is nothing more than Thick Latex Paint. And once you start coating it you must do it either annually or semi Annually.

If its metal...leave it alone. If you just want to change the color to reflect heat, talk to a Paint guy. All major Paint company's have an Answer guy you can talk too.

Paint company's know a lot more about this than we do.

We painted an aluminum roof trailer with an MAB product recommended by them and it has lasted over 15 years....and still looks good.

I read somewhere that in an effort to cool the trailer, treating the roof was a good idea, your thoughts?

I had a problem this past summer with heat in mine.

Henry 1-Gallon 287 White Roof Coating to coat roofs that drain water to prevent leaks, increase roof life and reduce cooling costs up to 35%. This coating is designed to expand and contract with your roof.

It took me two gallons to give a double coating that I liked.

Since the coating.. I've notice it's much cooler inside on sunny days. I expect it to be exactly what I needed come this summer.

I had a galvanized roof on my CT and could not touch it if it was parked in the sun. Went to Sherwin Williams and got a primer and white paint they recommended. It was like parking in the shade it made so much difference.

My CT has a galvanized steel roof. I used a product called Snow Systems Mobil Coat (white 85% reflectivity)for the primer coats, then their Snow Roof (white, 90% reflectivity) for the final coats. It made a really big differenc in the amount of absorbed heat from the roof. I have not finished installing the final layer of insulation in my ceiling, and before the roof coating, the exposed steel ceiling ribs would get very hot. So hot you could not keep your hand on it for very long! Now, it is the same temp as the face of the foam insulation. In my opinion. even if I have to recaot it every couple of years, it will be well worth it.
