I did do it. Probably wont be the first time either. I have come close before when I lowered the trailer off the jacks and had pushed the step underneath the trailer to be out of the way. Could not figure out why it would not lower right away... maybe I should not be telling on myself like this? Oh well.


The good news is I found a local shop that will only charge me $150 plus parts to weld on new perches and put my axles under the springs. That are going to do it October 27. I was going to attempt it myself, but for that price, I'll let the professionals handle it.

It should give me 3 to 4 more inches which I want for better clearance on poor forest roads, and also should allow me to put on a drop down step.

I just hope it won't affect towing too much. We will see. The existing perches will still be there so I can always undo it for another $150. :-)

About that axle flip. I may need to do that.

I had a little scare the other day while pulling the C.T around to the front of the house. This is an older pic before I caulked it all in nice but you get the idea.

As I was easing the trailer up and over the edge of the driveway I heard a loud scraping noise. I THOUGHT it was the bottom of the post that raises and lowers the trailer tongue so I kept on going a little bit and it only got louder and finally the truck just stopped. WTH?

When I got out and looked it was the BLACK TANK MOUNTING BRACKETS that were dragging and now I was stuck! The tank was compressed a little and one of the brackets was bent. All that work and now what am I going to do? I panicked bad and jumped back in and not sure if I should go backward or forward or none of the above, I went backward and after what seemed like forever the scraping stopped and I was free. Damage done though.

I don't think it will leak but I would like to fill it up and see but then where to dump. ( Im working on that. ) Please please be alright.

Bottom line is I may need to do that also so but I thought I could do it myself as I only have one axle.

please let me know how it works out.

The reason it happened is because I had the boat hitch on and it is 5 inches lower than the trailer hitch.

I will post a recent pic of the damaged brackets in a bit but damn it x10! MDA again!

Hope you luck out and boy the tank sure does protrude down a lot....or it at least appears that way.

Hey Tommy,
Sounds like a winter (or summer in your case) project. A bit of modification on the retaining system would get ya
1-2 inches. Maybe a skid plate? And ya know, 10+ year old leaf springs might sag a little when loaded... Do you have a good guess about your loaded weight?
Also, don't drive off the curb and be sure you are using the proper receiver hitch for this vehicle. You don't want to end up as a poster child for Jerry's Kids... just sayin'..... ... ..

The aluminum slide out step on my Featherlite trailer was a $375 option. I convinced my self that I should buy it by imagining all the different ways I could injure myself without the step. As I grow older, I am more prone to injury and, more importantly, with increasing frequency I do dumb things resulting in bad consequences.

I have hit the step wrong many times when leaving the trailer. I fell many times also as the step slipped or I placed my feet on it wrong. Now I try to rely on grab bars, but the slide out steps would go a long way to being safer for me.

Mcdave you are correct I really want to improve the way that tank is held in place and I will think about it. A solid metal skid plate maybe 3/8 thick aluminum might be ridged enough.

Also again I too have had my step slip out or tip over on me and I just know how bad you could get hurt and its a matter of when not if. I fell really hard face first in Ocala coming out of the trailer and I had the coleman stove in both hands to boot. I held on to the stove though!

Great idea on the slide out step. I will look into that also.

Very Cool! Wish I was down there. I'm so glad that you make good use of that beautiful trailer and bike every chance you get. You worked really hard and didn't half ass anything. It's awesome to see a man set a goal and take the steps required to get there, no compromise, no retreat, no surrender. And now you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor, in style.
'So yeah, take a bunch of pics., try to keep it clean, but not too clean. PG-13/R+ is probably good. You can always PM me with any "questionable material" Ok. Your probably gonna meet some great people down there, 99% of that crowd are just good people like us, but there is always some asshats in every crowd. So just be aware of your surroundings and listen to your instincts. Be safe and have a great time. Are you taking the Mrs.? Looks like a lot of stuff in there....
