Nice job on that window Sailor. A little light and the ability to see what's going on out there is a good thing. Gotta keep an eye out for them bears ya know... 8)

Amazingly with the tint not too much light comes in. Which my wife will like. She complains about too much light when sleeping... It will be nice to be able to look out the door and see whats out there.

Not that this window or any window would help. A buddy came back to his camp one day and a cougar was under his trailer napping...

Fender boxes

Postby dirtsailor2003 » Mon Feb 03, 2020 3:02 pm

I wonder if one could use these pre-built wheel well boxes as fenders? Width wise they may not be wide enough but could work. I have been thinking about making combo fender tool boxes. I'd like to store stuff like shovels, hi jack, axes, etc. in them.Attachment might be tricky with the end loader one with drawers.

I just googled wheel well boxes and was looking at images. There are quite a few out there and the prices are all over the map. I'd really like the side to open. Would make attachment easier. Also a top lid wouldn't interfere with the side wall when opening.

Great Idea!
I'm sure they are not cheap but for what you could gain.. might be a boon. I'm gonna look into it.
Thanks!

I had them designed into the Teardrop I was going to build. I may fab one up out of plywood to see if I like it. Epoxy it and cover it will Bed liner. Rear end would open. I would also put a couple doors on the side.

Yep, I doesn't look like you can find a set for less than a grand. I can fab them for much less. Plus they will be custom fit to my trailer and my needs. But I'm still hot on the concept. I want to move my fresh tank(s) to saddle bags like that and any extra storage I can get would be a huge bonus. I think Grummy made a set for his trailer last summer. I'll try to find the post.

Hey Sailor,
I really like that design. Multiple compartment doors seems like the right approach. What I saw @ Northern had 1 top lid access. It would work but not ideal for me. Here is a link to Grummy's build. I'm not able to load pics for some reason. He used tandem fenders as the frame of his boxes. He has some pics. that might help with design, including the supports to frame underneath.

Edit: Ok here are the pics.

Nice drawing. Are you a draftsman? Anyway, for the pair that looks to be right at (3) 4x8 sheets. .025 ATP approx. $500 + labor etc.. (hinges, locks, latches etc.)
0.045 approx. $700 + labor etc. So still a grand or more for a set. Approx half that if I DIY.? That wouldn't be out of the question but if I could use something cheaper than ATP I could still have some Jameson and maybe a cigar or 2.

I am a Design Associate with an architectural design firm. I spend most my time designing beams and things to make sure that our buildings stand up! I do as part of my job use several programs for drafting.

I wish my welding skills would allow me to weld something like this up, but they are not! Plus more than likely I will end up going with aluminum construction and powder coating, not diamond plate. I don't have the equipment to weld aluminum. So I'll be paying for the fabricators Jameson and cigars.

Dirt swabby, Howdy;

Don't forget to make sure the "wheel-well" section is heavy duty.
Had a blow-out with a travel trailer once at hi-way speed and it
really tore up the wheel well area. Just something to consider ...

Another approach could be to build a frame or skeleton and then skin it with galvanized or other more economical material. Also it may be worthwhile to consider the aerodynamics esp. at the leading edge. Nothing about my trailer except the rooftop A/C was designed cut the wind, but I don't need any more drag if I can avoid it. It wouldn't be real hard to add a facet or two the front and possibly rear that could be helpful as long as it is being custom made anyway. That could also help the aesthetics. May want to consider clearance lights as well. Just my thoughts this a.m.
