Smooth the walls

Postby travist » Sun Apr 21, 2019 9:37 am

So I've painted the walls and ceiling first coat on my ex hauler. My hope was that the sanded particle board walls would be smooth enough to end up smooth after painting (factory sanded) I'm thinking that they might not. I also have to cover up the joints between sheets and the screw holes.

I was originally just going to caulk the joints and screw heads/holes. But if I want to smooth the whole wall I'm wondering if there are any clever solutions. Skim coat with a filler? Give up and use wallpaper? Or door veneer?

The skim coat is the one I'm sort of hoping to find, but I think drywall putty won't work and caulking will be too difficult.

Any ideas from you wonderful fellow builders? I'm ok with the best and reasonably affordable option is just switch approaches

I have a 6 x 12 x 6. The garage area is 8 x 6 x 6. I used these on the walls and ceiling. Grey on the walls, tan on the ceiling. Cheap, durable and just hose em down if needed. They were the exact size for me.

Wallpaper did not work for me, even after following the instructions on how to seal/finish the plywood walls in preparation. I ended up applying a skimcoat of drywall mud to the entire surface including screw holes. I taped and mudded the corners but knew they would crack. They did so I ripped 1.5" strips of 1/4" plywood which I used at each corner, and over "butt" joints. After 3+ years of full-timing in our Neo, I've had no problems with the finish.

You can see my build in the link below.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! I'm wondering if a veneer might be a good option. Either that or just put a thin sheet of lauan on it.

The skim coat is also top on my list to try.

Sorry, but the carpet isn't an option for my wife in particular. But Thanks McDave

Veneer would work and look nice but would be expensive. I would use a 2 ply ( almost like a thin plywood) or a paper backed veneer. Apply with the appropriate glue then stain and finish as you like.

Thin plywood would give you the chance to add at least a bit of insulation between the plywood and particle board.

Thanks. I already have 1" insulation behind the particle board.

I went with the thin 1/8" plywood both as a good looking option and probably cheap. I glued and tacked it onto the osb.

No cracks, perfectly flat....
4oz fiberglass, 2 coats epoxy. Prime, sand, topcoat.
Just like a boat.
