Gas spring question

Postby Carolina_coast99 » Tue Sep 03, 2019 3:22 pm

Hello,
I'm trying to decide what type of gas spring I need.
They (2) springs will assist in "opening" the top part of my bed housing. Underneath will be storage area.
It will be a king mattress resting on a 3/4" plywood, 2x4" framing, with a piano hinge attached along the long edge of the mattress board. So, I will be raising the bed longways on the hinge with assistance from the springs. [A spring will be at the head and one at the foot of the bed]

I'm not sure:
What length (extended and compressed)?
What extension force...?
I attached what I am thinking I may need...

https://www.mcmaster.com/gas-struts

Not sure this is the full location for what I want but the part number is: 4138T58

Help is appreciated!

There's numerous calculators online that can help you in calculating what you need. This link will give you a good idea of which type to order for your application and give you an idea of what numbers you'll need for using a calculator.
