Flboy - Custom 6x12 Off-Road Toy Hauler Conversion

Postby flboy » Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:59 am

Well... I am doing a thing. Ordering a 6*12 Flat Nose with Barn doors to make an off road (sort of) capable 6*12 toy hauler for taking 1 dirt bike , 1 person (me), Lexus (my GSD) and having all the comfort amenities (access to bed , hot shower, toilet, and etc. with dirtbike on board and be 4 season). This will be just for me when i am solo. I have the 7*18 with 2ft v-nose when the wife comes with me (and we love it).. but I find it too large to get in the places I really want to go when I am alone. Smaller profile with more clearance and track behind truck... will weld up shocks and etc. to beef suspension and clearances. Bottom line.. there is no all around best camper just like there is no all around best motorcycle... I have three of them for different purposes! LOL. I will have 2 trailers depending on where I am going and who is with me.

Ordering today and will not be ready until March. I will pick it up at the Georgia factory and start the conversion in March/April (same place I got my custom Lark from in 2016). In the meantime, I will start this blog with the details of what I am ordering and then parts list for items I will be ordering for the build out. My plan is to detail it on this thread and I will be making videos as I go to help others. I will also be looking for some help and good advise from others as well. This will be my 3rd build, so I have learned a few things.. should be the best yet... for sure will be the smallest. The goal for expenses if $10,000 or less.

How tall of a trailer is this one? Full height or plan on keeping it shorter for walking and so forth ?

It will be 6.5ft tall inside. I am 6ft... and want a little margin.

Okay, this is the thing I did. Details of what I ordered. People always ask, so OTD on this was $4,794 with base price of $2,600.. so alot of upgrades and definitely custom. Will be a great platform. Builder of trailer is Anvil Trailers of Douglas, Georgia which is a smaller outfit not owned by the big boys and reportedly has great quality. We will see.

My build out goal it total of $10,000 or less including solar and lithium batteries, so it should nice. I will share Floorplan next. Trailer will not be ready for receipt until March. I figure April as they are always optimistic during the sales process.

I'm looking forward to following your electrical and A/C install.

I received mine from the factory with 110v shore power outlets installed. Now I'm adding the convenience options....LED lights running off the shore power with a 150w 110v to 12v converter and possibly adding battery power just for lights. More times than not I'll have access to shore power for my needs. Also looking into possibilities of buying a 3500w inverter generator when shore power is not available.

I'd like to add a house a/c unit 5000btu but have not dared cutting into the side of the skin....I just can't pull the trigger on that one yet.

March can't come soon enough for you I'm sure.

I will be cutting a few holes in the sides and roof of this new trailer in the process of building it out. Nothing to be concerned about. Just measure twice, cut once, and make sure to seal properly with Dicor Tape and Dicor Self leveling sealer on the roof and Dicor tape and caulk on the sides as needed. You will be good!

I think I will be building a faux wall on the back drivers side half of the trailer inset about 18 inches or so. I will keep the other half as is to allow the KTM to enter. I will mount the AC in that wall and put vents on the back door at the bottom and top with the top vent sealing up to the back of the AC. I will put my tankless water heater and most of the electrics, water pump, and etc, in this area... at least that is my first thought as I plan this build in my head.

I am thinking my bathroom will be much like this. I can use the shower pan area as a bathroom with door and then when I want to get a shower, I can set the Thetford out the door. I am not going to put in a Blackwater tank in this build for a few reasons. I will have a small gray water tank for those times I m getting a shower parked in a rest stop, Cracker Barrel, or etc.. I can empty the 5 gallon cassette holding tank on the Thetford in any toilet as needed so this really will be more convenient that finding a dump station.

flboy, Howdy;

Did you happen to mention that you'd need the slots in the frame for the ramps to the sales person?
Be a whole lot simpler if they did that job for ya don't ya think. I used to use a pair of 2X6s to load
my old harley in the back of my old F-100 (had a drop down tail gate), back-in-the-day.

Hi Hank. I am going to weld up hangers underneath. Wont be down lower than axles and I will have plenty of clearance when I move axle with springs on top. That's my thought anyway.

Hey Don, looking forward to following you on your next build. Is this bath from a previous build of yours? Doesn't look like the same one as in current build. Does it have a sliding shower curtain (right side of pic)? Wouldn't mind seeing a wider angle pic if this is one of yours. It looks similar to the shower pan I have. Like your idea on the grey tank.

Thanks,
Harry :D

Hi Harry, no this is not mine.. just a pic I found on internet actually from a Promaster Van conversion that I liked and will build similar. My first build just had outside shower and portable toilet. The existing one has a full up bathroom, and the next will be in between with a full inside shower and portable toilet.

I just got real lucky. Scored a couch/bed for my new build. It is only 12 inches tall seat height, but I will build a 7 inch high platform with drawers to set this on. It is only 5ft 3 long, so I can get a water tank that is about 19 inches tall by 9inches wide, by 30 inches long to fill in the gap on the rear wall on the right side of the couch for my last 9 inches to rest on.. It does not have to be exact, because I can build it up if needed. I want 40 gallons of water on board, so I can get a custom size tank built relatively inexpensively if I cannot find one off the shelf that I can make work.

This convertible couch really meets my needs since I will be able to sleep on the couch with bike onboard or have a wider bed when it is not.

So happy about this. The best part is I got it for FREE.. just had to clear a path to get it down off a big shelf in a warehouse. Was recently reupholstered with leather. So thankful!

Converts in literally 3 seconds by lifting up and pushing back.

Nice light steel frame. Will be easy to bolt to 7 inch high platform I will build. This will give the couch a standard height for sitting.
