anyone using a split mini ac on their cargo trailer? any adverse effects? is it easy to install? I have been reading about these units and would maybe install one in a 6x12 cargo,or would a rooftop be better?

I have not found a minisplit under 9000 BTU. That is probably overkill on 6*12 like a rooftop would be. A 5000 BTU window unit would be a good efficient size for a 6*12 assuming it is insulated well.

I wish they made a smaller sized minisplit. I like them and the many installation alternatives afforded by the split design. If you know of a 5000 to 7000 BTU minisplit, please share..

i figured if I posted about mini split ac, maybe someone in the vast unknown would have already done it and I/we could gain from their experience.
yes, 9000 being the smallest, would turn the CT into a meat locker.

No experience with these but did find this 6k unit.....https://hvacdirect.com/mitsubishi-mz-fh ... tm_source={google}&utm_medium={cpc}&utm_campaign=12269839898&adgroupid=119133854284&utm_content=496890697919&utm_term=&gclid=CjwKCAiAjp6BBhAIEiwAkO9Wuu_2UoMJkF_veNjO9PXLVm40cn8ShQwMIiWmZSKz6-hXwgxifhwp6RoCbJIQAvD_BwE

A bit pricey my wallet and would probably take up more space than you are willing to give up....
Height Indoor Unit: 12-11/16" | Outdoor Unit: 21-5/8"
Width Indoor Unit: 36-7/16" | Outdoor Unit: 31-1/2"
Depth Indoor Unit: 9-3/16" | Outdoor Unit: 11-1/4"

As flboy has recounted many times, one of the significant advantages to a window type air conditioner is that, if breaks while you are on the road, you can find a relatively cheap replacement unit at almost any Walmart or big box store.

I know someone with a 9k in their 6x12, and when he had it running in August in Texas it wasn't overkill and it ran easily off his 3500 watt generator. They are super quiet, so quiet in fact I didn't know it was running. It's amazing how quickly it cools. He's had no issues, no complaints, no condensation other worries inside the trailer.

I can't claim any direct knowledge on the install as I didn't help with it, but he says it was straight forward with no real surprises. He put the outside unit on the tongue and didn't' have to modify much to mount it. I've seen others that required a bit of work to get them to mount on the side of the frame, or required welding brackets on the tongue to get the outside unit to mount.

I was on the fence, and decided to go window unit in a hatch on the side for a few reasons, but wall space the main one. I would have to give up space I have other plans for to fit the inside unit, even on a smaller mini split. I figure if I really hate the window unit, I can make a few sacrifices for the mini split. Short of some maintenance concerns others have expressed (and they may not matter for your use case) I think they can be a great way to go, the fact they are so quiet is probably the single biggest advantage in my opinion.

Split minis really shine when you look at energy consumption. As mentioned they are also very quiet compared to conventional window units. But split minis do cost much more.

Another option would be these "saddle mount" units which may be the best of both styles.
