Teardrop + Kayaking = Great Weekend

Postby b.bodemer » Mon Aug 20, 2007 9:33 am

I had a chance to take the td while out for an extended kayaking weekend. My first stop Thursday late afternoon was at Slippery Rock Creek in Pa. It was only 2 hours away and gave me a chance to set up a tarp for when I'm traveling by myself.

Here's my first campsite at Slippery Rock with my lightweight fly on top.

Friday morning I finished the drive to Ohioplyle to paddle the lower Yough with the women of our club for the annual Ladies Day trip. This is one of my most favorite days to kayak.

It's fun hamming it up for the local photographer who waits at Cucumber Rapid. It's a fun surf wave to get on and my new boat carved the wave so nice.

The next morning I noticed all my kayak friends were wearing name tags. I asked if anyone new was with our group? Their reply was no, that they thought maybe I had forgotten who they all were since I was AWOL for a year of boating while building the td! It was really funny to see 15 people walking around with name tags all morning.

Most kayakers don't set up tents unless they would be in one location for a longer time. Generally to move to find water levels good for boating. Most of us have trucks, vans, suvs or wagons so we can easily pull into camp and sleep in our vehicles. Here's the td nestled in along a row of vehicles. When we left for paddling on Saturday my td was the only one left in camp!

Sat and Sunday were great days on the river. It was my first time back on the lower Yough in over a year. Here's another shot of me this time running Cucumber Rapid. Yep.......I'm in there somewhere!

I towed the td home Sunday in 3 1/2 hours of heavy rain. This morning found I had a small leak in the driver side td door so I propped up the mattress and it's drying out now. No big deal at all and will take another look at the weatherstripping on that door. Everything else was dry!!!!!!!

Well I'll sign off like most of my friends do who email messages:
SYOTR............See you on the river!

Thanks Mary K and Madjack........................

My buddy Bill who helped me with my teardrop has said he likes his van for now but might consider a build once he sees how much I use mine this first year. Since he helped me so much I told him I'd be back over in a heart beat to help in any way with his. He has three trailers in his yard and would work for building a td!

The funniest part of the trip was on Ladies Day morning I parked the truck and td in the boaters parking lot. The ladies knew I realy couldn't be part of shuttling cars to the end due to the td in tow and really tough hills. Would not have been worth it...........so I had an extra half hour then to get changed and ready and I barley made it. Hikers and bikers coming through the parking lot all stopped to asked "What is that?" and wanted a tour!

That looks like a great time. 8)

I used to spend a lot of time in Lakewood when I was a kid. My Grandmother lived on Belle Ave.

The only river I remember from back then is "Rocky River".

The Slippery Rock, PA adventure looks like more fun.

Great pictures.

Great pictures and story. I bet you sleep more comfortably in the TD than in the back of a truck. What luxury. Very jealous, but thank you for sharing.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Hello Kens,

I camped at Chesseman Farm camground. He charges $7 per person so it's a good deal when you pull in and you are by yourself. He has a lot of kayakers who stay there.......very quiet as it's just before you drop down the hill to Eckerts Bridge in McConnels Mill State Park. With all this rain I bet Slippery Roack Creek will be cranking this week!!!!!!

Looks like an awesome trip!!

I'm taking the T@B out this weekend to go whitewater on the Ocoee!! Not kayaking, just rafting with an outfitter, but we're doing the Upper Olympic Run.

I can't wait!!

Carol and Rick,
The Ocoee is my most favorite river and I had the opportunity to kayak the upper Ocoee twice. You'll love it too.

Barb ...

Mary K ... has it right about enjoying the TD but your face in this picture
exemplifies your joy for the rivers your kayak glides through and for the life you richly live.
