My Kansas River trip

Postby WarPony » Sun Sep 23, 2007 6:49 pm

My good friend John and I went on a 25-mile canoe trip this past weekend on the Kansas (Kaw) River. Nothing to do with Teardropping but is a trip and adventure, nonetheless.

(Below) This is me in river mode........
Image

(Below) John found this rack on the bank so we did what every red-blooded American would do............... tied it to the front of our canoe!!!!!
Image

(Below) This was our campsite on Saturday afternoon.........

(Below) Ahhhh, one of my world famous fires..............
Image

(Below) Sunday morning sunrise on the Kaw..........

(Below) On top of the low head dam at the Topeka water treatment plant. Last month, two men lost their lives when they went over this in a canoe and drowned. Low head dams are killers, folks!!!!!!!!!!

(Below) The view from below the dam.........

That's all, folks........... hope you enjoy.

:o I wanna go! :D Great pictures Jeff, Thanks. You would think they would put up some kind of barrier to keep people from going over. Those things are what keeps me off the rivers. :chicken:

Great pictures Jeff,

When we lived by Lawrence, we wouldn't take our canoe out on the Kaw, because there was always somebody getting killed on that river. With the snags and undertows and whirlpools, just didn't seem worth the effort.

How about mosquitoes? They used to be big enough to carry off a man. Figure that must be what happened to that deer, attacked and eaten by mosquitoes.

Yep, 10 days before the 2 fellows drowned at the dam, a 9-year old boy drowned playing with siblings and friends while wading in the river near Maple Hill, KS........... he hasn't been found.

Most drownings (I think) are due to lack of respect for the power of water. Even though it was hot this weekend, we still wore our PFD's, no matter what. I thought about that little boy alot and kept an eye out for him.

Jeff... Looks like ya'll had a good time. Nice pictures too...
Florida isn't exactly known for its wild and wooly rapids... So folks often go canoing on the Suwannee thinking it is all just flat lazy water. But there are a few places that can hurt you... Big Shoals just above me has drowned more than it should, and after a rain it can get wicked. It's not even a class 1 rapid and yet it kills people.

Great pics!! I agree, most drownings are due to unprepared folks. PFDs are a must on any type of water!!
