Florida Keys in February-March: Paradise

Logman...We enjoyed our Keys 2012 trip so much we've decided to go back next year, staying at Sugarloaf Key KOA. We'll be looking out for you. If you see a 2011 Little Guy Silver Shadow, on your FL Keys trip, come on over and say hello. On the way back north, we hope to hit some of the beautiful campgrounds along the Gulf coast of FL. It will be a great trip.

strange. truckers us there flashers when driving all the time and dot says use flashers if going 10 below the speed limet. its one big main tool and has to work on a truck. I use them all the time if I am like the last car in road constution or have to stop suddly in the highway like for a tractor or what ever.

I think its not true at all that flashers are illegal when driving. I think your florida police guy was a little off on his laws.

I do have a 3rd brake light on my teardrop above my license plate on the rear hatch. its made from a 12 buck 3rd brake light revicer hitch adapter.

works great. and at nights I have clearence lights on top and tail lights mounted up in the hatch i line of sight.

heres the back end of my teardrop you got red clearence lights on top all are to the federal motor carrier standards and copyed of a enclosed trailer such as a u- hual.

then you got 3rd brake light above license plate.

then you got flush mounted red taillights in line of sight of tailing motorist.

then you got white clear back up lights for getting into stuff like camp grounds afer dark.

theres really no reason to rearend me and I am well federal law legal and visble after dark from the rearend of my teardrop.

this beats just a pair of small tail lights down on the bottom of the galley hatch or the rear bumber of the teardrop.

I sure like Slowcowboy's solution to the visibility issue . Last week I was at an RV dealership that now carries Little Guys. They had a new Silver Shadow on the lot which has the same bank of redlights across the top of the TD just as seen in Slowcowboy's trailer picture. In addition they have added lights to each fender. If memory serves, the tail lights are now larger and mounted on the trunk lid. LG's new lighting scheme is very much like the configuration Slowcowboy is using on his trailer.

Besides the great weather and scenery, the friends we've made at Sugarloaf Key KOA have been the best part of our trip. We now have many, new friends who we've met through camping. These folks return to this campground, year after year. For us, it was like a reunion when we arrived this year. We'll see them all next February, if not before. We've all decided to meet during the summer and spring closer to our homes. How cool is camping? Really, it's great.

This year, we visited more of the landmark bars and restaurants.

Captain Tony's is the original Sloppy Joe's. This the place where Ernest Hemingway hung his hat, Jimmy Buffett got his start as a performer and Truman Capote was often seen.


Inside Captain Tony's the ceiling and walls are adorned with dollar bills and bras. It's been estimated that there is over $100,000 in that bar. There are no estimates about the number of bras!



Outdoor dining is the norm for Key West. We tried the famous conch fritters. Yum!

I'll just let readers know that there is a Tear Jerker, week long, gathering planned for Feb. 19-26, 2014. We're staying at the Sugarloaf Key KOA. All are welcome to join us, but available campsites are in limited supply. Campsites cost about $90/night. There is a lengthy Sugarloaf Key KOA thread with plenty of photos and a few videos:

Everyone who visits Key West has to go to the Southern Most Point in the continental USA.



A typical scene in Key West, palm trees, turquoise water and a bike. Many visitors tour the key on a bike. You can rent them or bring your own.

Sugarloaf Key KOA. We've camped there both years we visited the Keys. It's an RV resort, but the best part of this campground is the wonderful bunch of campers who stay there. We have made great friends there, so we're going back next year too:

A very nice state park and campground in the Keys is on Bahia Honda Key, 37 miles from Key West.

Camping is available in this park, but it is in such high demand that campers have to register exactly eleven months prior to their visit. Exactly means at 12:01 AM, eleven months prior, to the day, be ready to click your mouse on the send button. If you are lucky enough to get a campsite, you'll enjoy ocean camping in an ideal setting. Camping rates are more reasonable here than most of the private campgrounds on the Keys.
