CA to CO. with a Foamie behind a 1929 Mercedes

Postby Woodpecker » Sat Jun 24, 2017 2:06 pm

I made this trip to work in a Non-profit in Colorado.
Stayed there 2 years then came back to CA..
The car is a 1929 Mercedes SSK Kit car I built from scratch and painted in a tent.
The trailer is a Foamie i built called the Oubliette.

First stop was Reno. Spent a few nights on BLM land to the N/ NE of the city.

I spent a good month tooling around the Black Rock desert and Gerlach area.

Fell in Love with Carson City and stayed there over 2 months.
Some beautiful BLM land right on the river to the East of the city.
Lots of awesome canyons and only 6 miles to town.

Robinson Mountain. My last name =)

My view driving through Utah.

Made it! That last stretch over the Mountains was tense but I made it!

2 weeks after I got to Alamosa, Co.

Yeah, glad I had moved into a 21"er at that point.
Fun drive, the last bit was a bit cold, no heater and a plastic window.
Do it again in a heartbeat

The biggest difference between a dreamer and a doer is the follow through.

Thanks :)

There's a build report for the car with pictures on my FB page. I built it electric first.

It was a dream to not have any schedule at all.
I'll eventually be going back to Carson City. Great people and great camping areas.

Thanks =) :wine:
Yeah plastic windows and no heater made for a cold drive.
Even worse was that if I put my drivers plastic window on it would instantly fog over and be a solid wall.
Not that those windows were ever easy to see through to start with.
After 30 minutes at speed I'd be a Popsicle. I barely made 100 miles a day I was so frozen.
I'd plot a line to the closest campground over 50 miles away then keep trying campgrounds until I found one that was open.
One of the campgrounds in Utah had only snow plowed one road into one little camp site. I was very grateful.
It did make for some nice pictures.
