No. You don't understand. These GSI Dutch ovens are not Teflon coated. They are hard-anodized with garnet dust. Completely inert. They off-gas nothing.

Oh Prem,

I know they don't have teflon, but I haven't been impressed with hard anodized stuff from caphalon (before they went mostly non-stick teflon).

Maybe I'm doing something wrong with the hard anodized stuff?

RK,

Here's the deal. Caphalon Dutch ovens (and a couple of other brands) are intended for indoor cooking on gas or electric stoves/ovens. They have Teflon or another synthetic coating over the aluminum. The outsides are hard-anodized. I wonder if the inside of the pot is also or if it just has the non-stick coating on top of the bare aluminum.

These GSI-brand Dutch ovens are made for cooking directly on fire or charcoal briquettes. No Teflon. Entirely hard-anodized inside and out. Regular kitchen-quality pots cannot take that kind of heat without warping and burning the synthetic, non-stick coating. Nor are their lids heavy for putting charcoal on the top like camp Dutch ovens.

These GSI pots are camp Dutch ovens, designed for the campfire and for charcoal on their lids. The hard-anodizing is pretty darn non-stick!

Hope you get one. I love mine!

Watch for them to go on sale after Xmas with free shipping. They did last year here:

Eric,

Cool mon!

I started with the little 10" one thinking that would be plenty big. Ha. Sold it to a friend here on the forums. I skipped right up to the biggest one, the 14er. Now I can cook for a group or just for me, but I end up giving some food away to friends and still have left-overs for a few days. I like the 14er because it got me cooking for others, not just for me, at gatherings first, then at home also. That made me season things a bit more and use spices and ingredients that I never used before. I cook pretty healthy with more veggies than meat.

With any of the three GSI Dutch ovens, you can lay down hot coals inside a Wok ring, then put the inverted Dutch oven lid on the ring, oil it and use it as a griddle for pancakes or eggs.

Use a wooden or plastic spoon or spatula. Metal will scratch the surface.

:D Prem

Another $10 item and you get free shipping.

The other place where these went on sale last year after Xmas was SunnySport.com, but I see that they don't have any in stock...which likely means they won't have a sale this year.

A Hard Anodized DO is on my wish list! I would prefer an 8", but don't find any with legs. GSI makes a 10" with legs, and it's available for under $65 right now, but I have no budget at the moment.

Cliff,

Nope. GSI does not make a 10" with legs. The 10" has a flat bottom. You have to use a wok ring or stand if you want to put it to cook on top of charcoal. Sorry.

That 12 inch with legs is shallow. 5 quart.

Any chance of them being available at Gander Mountain? I live by one and can go get one right now. If I get the one without legs, do I put it on a grate with legs over the coals then?

Just get out early on heavy trash day.......

Gas stove burner grates not only make a great lid rest they will also convert your flat bottom pots and pans to "legged" cookware to cook over charcoal !

and to the dutch oven guys any way to buy a lid for a dutch oven I already own that is missing a lid?

Slowcowboy.

Mike: I am ashamed of you ! All the junk resources and a dad with metal skills just cut a circle of sheet aluminum or sheet steel and drill one hole in the center for an eye bolt you have your lid.

I got lucky found a 10" lodge camp oven lid at a yard sale for $3.00 and it fits a couple of my skillets and two leggless dutch ovens that had domed roaster lids.

I am a scrapper/garbage picker full time. I just scrapped four of those grates yesterday, and they were brand new. Never thought of using them on the coals!
