Will the electrolysis take off the black paint?

My Wagner was painted on the outside of the iron as well as the base.

Dave, I think I'll just try paint stripper or oven cleaner on the base. I did try the electrolysis (for 2 days) but it didn't clean up and well as the other cast iron.
I'll let you know.

Mark , the cooking spray is what I've used also. PAM with Olive Oil seems to a good choice.

The cooking spray is a good idea but the olive oil has a very low smoke point plus high solids. Better to go with vegetable oil spray or something with a higher smoke point for initial seasoning. :) Edit: The extra virgin olive oil is a good choice as it is low solids. Check the can.

Hoss, thanks for the tip. The can says it is made from EVOO so I guess it has low solids.

I don't get a lot of build up on the waffle plates so I suppose the PAM (EVOO) is the right choice.

I also have a "sprayer" for oil which I can use with traditional EVOO.

Thanks for the information.

Sorry for the slow response. I've been down with the stomach thing that is going around. Dave, the easy off worked good on my base.

Kurt (Indiana) wrote:cuyeda, I bought an old Wagner very similar to yours but with long metal handles. Mine has crusted on soot (oil?) from many years of use. This stuff is baked on and is very hard. I decided to leave it on (for character) and it works great as is.

I can vouch for how well Kurt's iron works. His waffles are perfectamundo. :coffee:

I started with nothing and still have most of it left.
