mmmmmmmm, waffles

Postby 1849 » Wed Nov 14, 2007 1:33 pm

Hey, look what just arrived in the mail yesterday:

Image

Just in time for a scout camping trip this weekend. :ilovecamp:
It's very clean inside and out, but is a bit sticky, so I guess I'll need to wash it. I think I may need to season it as well, I'm new to the cast iron family. Is there a quick way to season it at home tonight? Can someone point me in the right direction? Also, what about waffle mix? I've never made 'em before. I'm thinking I may burn a few before I get it right.

Elliot , I'd clean it as best you can and spray with a good coat of PAM vegitable oil (all over). Bake it at 400F for a couple of hours and let it cool gradually. If there's time do it a second time.

When you make the waffles, get it up to temp and spray with PAM, pour in the batter and cook about 2-3 minutes per side. Check occasionally until you get familiar with how it works.. It should work fine. (at least mine did.)

Hey Kurt,

Thanks! Will be doing some baking this evening. Does it smoke up the house?

it's possible. If you can season it on a BBQ outside then you dont have to worry about it.
If you do it in an oven put a sheet of foil on the bottom rack to catch any grease that drips off. If you use PAM you probably wont have a problem. I use Crisco

nice buy. i love Griswold

Seperate the two halves and put them on the top rack. Mine didn't smoke much.
