Covered DO table

Postby depatty » Fri Dec 07, 2007 12:14 pm

Needed a table to use with the dutch ovens so got to looking at an old propane grill that had already been gutted and used as a charcoal grill. Checked the fit of the 14" DO and it just fit. Removed the plastic side shelves/tables and replaced with 2 pieces I cut from a metal shelf. Found 2 broiler tops and with minor modifications screwed them to the inside of the grill body. Put a metal box underneath the catch ashes and plan to test it out this afternoon/evening. Next will be a shelf on the bottom to store the ovens and accessories. Not collapsable but I think it will serve well, and it even fits into the camper with room left to squeeze past to get to stuff.

Decided to use what I had. Side tables are pieces of a steel shelf I cut. Hot stuff no problem. ;)

Closer view of side shelf. Attached by 6 sheetrock screws from underneath.

The cooking surface is old broiler pan tops. I drilled holes at the sides and attached them with screws to the sides of the grill to make sure they will support two full dutch ovens. Openings in bottom of grill allow ashes to fall into a pan on a shelf below.

Another view of the cooking surface. 14" Lodge DO just fits. ;)

Dutch oven grill fits fine with plenty of room to get past. 8)

I love recycling--great idea. IMHO if everyone started using a charcoal tower to light briquettes, lots of propane grills would become recyclable trash.

I made my DO table out of the center structure of an old folding cot my father in law got from a state park (real good steel--pun intended) and cut the necessary sheet metal from an old junked electrical panel. A few bends, a little stitch welding and, viola, a dutch oven table big enough for both my 12 inch and 10 inch DOs. Unfortunately it isn't covered, but it is easily transportable.
