Question on Wagner Waffle Iron

Postby Nobody » Sat May 24, 2008 10:30 pm

Saw a complete cast iron waffle iron & base today while browsing at a local flea market. Appears to be in excellent shape with no cracks, no discernible rust or pitting, hinge pin in excellent shape. Not sure why but the base bail will not 'swing' far enough over the hinge to allow the iron to tilt completely?? Is that normal? The iron has wood handles in very good condtion. Top of the iron is marked in 'raised letters' -
WAGNER WARE with a single "W" acting as first letter for both Wagner & Ware (the 'ARE' of Ware is below the GNE of Wagner; below that is SIDNEY; below that is -0- & below that is 8, all within a circle approx 2 1/2 - 3" in diameter. Below the circle is - PAT'D FEB 22, 1910.

Vendor has a price on it of $45. Is that price anywhere near reasonable. or what would be a good price? TIA

Harvey...does the base have any castings on the bottom edge that indicate it was made for that iron? I'm only thinking that it is possible that it's a base that wasn't mated to the iron originally. I'd think it is unlikely that a bail got broken and was replaced. I'd think it ought to drop down below the joint however. You might try, pushing in on the sides of the bail so that it does clear the ball joint. Don't have a Wagner, I've got a Griswold high base. Check it out and try to determine if it's an original or a newer casting. Some of the newer Asian castings are pretty funky for fit-up and finish. Just an idea. I know that Kevin has a cast iron pricing book, maybe he'll chime in. Doug

Harvey,
Just one question...
Is the "22" in script or block like everything else?
If it's in script, it's legit.

Harvey, I just checked my book, it has the wagner iron valued at $50.00
I don't think you'd go wrong at $45. Below are a couple pics of my Wagner.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll go by there again today & take a closer look. May also try to 'sneak' a pic. I'm not really 'into' the cast iron so much but it looked like a pretty neat item if it's genuine.
