Cheap windscreen

Postby chezrad » Sat Oct 18, 2008 11:48 pm

I have been making cobblers every weekend for the last three weeks. 8) I do them in the backyard. Lately it has been really windy and this has affected the heat that the coals can generate. I hit upon an idea that worked well. I thought I'd pass it on.

I had some metal flashing that was for another project. I cut a piece of it and riveted it together into a circle that was larger than my 10" dutch. Cost next to nothing and seemed to do the trick. Here are some pics.

Oh yeah, the cobbler turned out great!

Nice idea, and today I was looking at a roll of flashing, wondering what I could do with it as it sat on the shelf. So now I know what to do with the spare flashing.

Could we have the recipe and instructions for the cobbler now.

Cobbler Recipe

Postby chezrad » Sun Oct 19, 2008 6:13 am

This is what we do with the boy scouts. It's really simple and it turns out well.

Spray the DO with pam
5 pats of butter in the bottom (any pattern you like)
half a box of dry cake mix
half a can of soda
"swirl" the soda into the cake mix (don't mix, just use a stick, end of spoon, or you finger and make a spiral...once)
Put in one can of pie filling
Drain as much liquid off a second can of pie filling and put it in
Put the rest of the cake mix on top
Add the rest of the soda
Swirl once
Put five more pats of butter

9 coals on bottom, 16 coals on top (for 10" DO) rotate DO and lid after 20 minutes, done after 40 minutes.

Variations:

Apple pie filling
Spice cake mix
Root Beer

Cherry Pie fillng
White cake mix
Cheerwine

Blackberry pie filling
French Vanilla cake mix
Vanilla pepsi

Good luck! 8)

Nice idea for a wind screen and thanks for the variations, never really gave thought to anything but the white cake and apple.
I've got to try the Spicecake and root beer

Nice wind screen. I thougt about a similar idea, but was going to connect the two ends with velcro so I could detach them, lay it flat and stow it under the mattress or somewhere similar.

Make sure you make it big enough around so the heat doesn't melt your vlecro...

Perhaps, a simple S hook, and drill a catch hole on the opposite end.

You don't need any kind of a hook or fastener if you cook in an oil pan. Before I built my table, I used an oil pan and flashing.

Flashing is the perfect wind screen if you build a plow disk cooking table.

It was so windy at Brown county back in may that I had to go to the camp store and get some stakes and some bungie cords to hold my flashing down. Joanne can I borrow your table design?

Cool idea. Now I have an idea what I can use that roll of flashing for.

Absolutely!! I am always honored when someone thinks one of my designs is good enough that they want to build one for themselves. Of course I'm not taking credit for the disk tables! Someone thought those up a LONG time ago. Just the way I attached the windscreen to it.

I've carried a piece of folded-up flashing for years when backpacking to act as a windbreak around my little stove. It's light and works great.

A 12" dutch oven fits in a 14" Weber Smokey Jo Jr. grill perfectly. I will never camp without my grill so I always have MY windscreen. At Zero you need to contain all the heat you can.

A starter chimney is not needed just dump the charcoal in the grill base without any of the racks and light them. In 6 - 8 minutes remove the coals needed for the top and set the DO in the grill bowl.

pics are from the January Shivaree outside temp about 16 degrees !
