Iron fiend

Postby dreadcptflint » Wed Apr 01, 2009 4:14 pm

I made the mistake of going antiquing yesterday with my wife. The reason that I say mistake is that tomorrow is her birthday. Yes, I ended up going back today for a GRISWOLD NO. 5-OVAL ROASTER. There were some other unusually pieces but this one she had to have. It is the most that I have spent on a pan ever. I am glad that she is worth it.

Is there any more enablers out there?

I was thinking a nice pendleton blanket and maybe an overnight trip to Winthrop. I wasn't expecting to spend my budget on one piece of Iron. :?
I guess I am still a little sticker shocked over the whole thing.

I'm with Miriam....I'd love to see photos. I've never seen a Griswold Oval Roaster so it would be an interesting pic.

For the record, I didn't pay half that much. It is minus the trivet and in better shape. It's still a heck of a lot of money. The vendors had a few more really unusual pieces. (If I wanted to get back into dealing then I would have bought them).

Here is the first roast:

Leg of Lamb to 150 degrees and a perfect med rare. It is worth every penny if every meal turns out this way.

From what I have been reading now is a good time to buy antiques. They are historically cheap and abundant. I just am lucky my sweetie likes useful things like cast iron.

For example last Christmas, I purchased a Mouli for $32 last week I found one in the box for $18. I have seen the price of some of the big ticket items drop even more radically.
