Just to be on the safe side you might want to skip cooking acidic foods in old style aluminum cookware.

Lots of hysterics recently about links to aluminum cookware and Alzheimer's disease. Granted no real studies have been done, but one thing that is know; older (non-coated) aluminum cookware and acidic food and drastically increase aluminum intake.

Best to be on the safe side and not do a tomato based dinner in it.

This doesn't apply to newer aluminum cookware, that DOES have a stable oxide coating.

Most beverage cans have a lacquer type coating inside.

My mom warned me of the dangers of aluminum cookware over 30 years ago. She had me toss out an old pot she gave me. :D Danny

A self cleaning oven should do fine with cleaning you D.O just remember to remove the bail as it will temper it.

What do they say about cooking in silver cookware, you know, like royalty did thousands of years ago? Or was that "eating" off of silver platters?

Thanks to all of you for the helpful info in regard to the Aluminum Dutch Oven...Think it really would be a nice piece once have all the black off and have clean looking aluminum stareing back at us. This was the weekend for cleaning up all the cast iron pieces we have been picking up at local thrift stores for past months. 6 pieces in all. They all turned out really well. Now this Aluminum Dutch Oven is next..
We'll give it our best shot....Thanks again, Patty

This is about the best article I could find: http://www.thedietchannel.com/Alzheimers-Disease.htm

The evidence that aluminum is causing Alzheimer's is anecdotal, but cooking high acid foods in uncoated aluminum is still probably not a good idea.
