Gift ideas ???

Postby eveningprimrose » Sun Dec 27, 2009 10:29 pm

As some of you may have read on another thread, we're planning to have "our Christmas", next week (we're going camping). One or two of the gifts I want to get my husband, is some cast iron. I need some suggestions, please!

We started camping about 3-years ago, and got our teardrop, this past June. When we were tent camping, we just used the speckled blue enamelware pots and pans that came with our dishes, and a set of cast iron skillets that I got from an auction.

So, now that we've got the teardrop, he wants to replace everything (eventually), with good cast iron. I'd like to get him a few good starter pieces, but I don't know what to get. I'm thinking a Dutch Oven should be #1 on the list.

I won't have time for mail order. The shopping choices in our area are Bass Pro Shop (the biggest and best Bass Pro Shop), a Coleman Outlet Store, and a plethora of antique malls/flea markets. Any suggestions?

 Well those antique stores might cost a lot so look around for some good stuff. You might get a good 10" Lodge DO from the Bass Pro shop. Lovely store :D

Yes, it is a wonderful store, isn't it? I could spend a whole day, there. In fact, I think I will!

Just a hint....

By happy accident my dutch oven coal lid also fits my chicken fryer skillet.

I have on several occasions baked low profile bake goods like brownies in the chicken fryer. The heat is closer and things like cheese covered cassarols brown up real nice.

In reverse I can use the domed chicken frier lid as a drip top to bake a roast in the d.o.

My point is if they all match you have great versatility

on another note ........

NO LEGS ...... NO PROBLEM

neighbor was tossing out a gas stove I asked for the burner grates and he just shook his head and said NOW WHAT ???

start the coals toss down the grate and set your skillet on the grate You now have legs for your flat bottomed skillet. With the coal lid you have a low profile dutch oven. I'm thinking pizza

My 12" Deep Camp Chef DO and my 12" Lodge skillet are my most prized possessions. And, the lid from the DO fits the skillet. I use the skillet with the DO lid a lot for making pizza. Oh, and I use a lid stand for legs on the skillet when I use it that way.

Also, I highly recommend a good lid lifter. bobhenry sells these
