Scotch bowl

Postby sdakotadoug » Mon Sep 27, 2010 6:02 pm

Just picked up a Griswold Scotch bowl. I intent to use it mostly as a wok for stirfrying. Here's my question and showing my stupidity, how was the scotch bowl originally intended to be used?

Stupidity........... no, I'm going to say ignorance because I had never seen or heard of one of these, either. That thing is pretty cool!! I did a quick search and found some on Ebutt but nobody had any info. I'm guessing the ring has something to do with the name, I remember seeing a show that had some sort of Scotch pouring thing-a-ma-bobber with a ring on it.

Chili sounds good, let me know and I'll be over........

There are a lot of uses for Scotch Bowls. Just be creative, for example you could cook soups, oatmeal, Etc, These were most often used for making a thick Scotch broth barley soup or for porridge.

+1 what Ironhead said, for making broths and soups but also used for porridge, the latter more common to Maslin Kettles, I believe, but either can be used for both purposes based on my recent research on Maslin Kettles. They were not supplied with lids because what was typically cooked in them required frequent stirring.

Drinking Scotch at a South Central Gathering? :D

"These vessels were most often used for making thick Scotch broth barley soup or for porridge. The bowl is lidless because porridge has to be stirred constantly."

Hi! thank you so much for referring to my blog. I also wondered what a scotch bowl was, and figured others would too.
