Chuck wagon Stove......Update DONE!

Postby Woodbutcher » Tue Apr 19, 2011 6:31 pm

I found this for sale in a small antique store The lady stated it was a chuck wagon stove. They also had the chuck box for it but that was held for someone so I did not see it. This thing is really cool. The stove has 3 burners that have 2 wicks each. She said it was fueled with Kerosene. There is a pot off the back for the fuel. The top of the stove tilts back to get to the burners. All the knobs work and the wicks are all there. The stove says "The Reddy" and has a pat. 1881 on it. The tank has Chicago on it. In all my years of Antiquing I have never seen one. Anyone familiar with this stove?

No it's still sitting there. Being a specialty piece I don't think it will run off. But I can not find any info on the stove. I really like it but don't know where I would put it. Some one will know something about it.

How much does that thing weigh and more importantly, how much are they asking for it?

NICE! Have you checked out the Wagner and Griswold forum? I'll bet someone there knows something about it.

I know a few "reenactors" who'd love to get their hands on something like that - even if they didn't know what to do with it. It just looks downright neat.

They were asking 500 bucks, very pricey. I just asked what would you take and she said 400. It is about 50-60 lbs I would guess. As for the doors, they just open to get to the burners. The little cathedral pieces don't open. The little doors need some new mica in them and one burner top has a crack where it is screwed down, otherwise it is complete. I could not say the price was good or bad. But when you can not find anything like it you tend to lean toward the price being on the higher side. But that could just as well be a $1000.00 or more. Who knows.

Thanks Dusty on the Griswold Wagner forum. That's a good idea.

Well I spent over a week looking for info on this stove. Other then info on the company itself I found nothing on this stove. Just could not give it up so I went back today and bought it. After I get it all back together and restored I'll post some pictures. There are a couple of pieces that need to be nickel plated. They included some Mica for me to put in the doors . She worked a little more on the price to ,so that helped. This should be a fun project!

I'll take plenty of pictures . They will help me remember how it goes back together. I took in a few pieces to be re nickel plated today. Got all the nuts soaking in penetrating oil and hope to disassemble some of it tomorrow.

Well all done with the exception of 3 small sheet metal heat deflectors that separate the burners and the screws that hold on the plating have been misplaced by the plating company. Other then that is finished. Non of my email inquiries to stove experts have been answered yet. Hope I did everything right. I used Hi heat BBQ Rustoleium paint.
