Loiok what I just purchased at a Goodwill in Oregon. I have a small collection of cast, but nothing like this. If the price is right i'll purchase any dutch oven I come across. I was wondering if any of you have seen anything like this before. It's different. It looks like it has a seam down the middle but I'm guessing it must be a mold line???? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I thought it would make a great chile or soup pot........

Thanks,

That is the standard type of "potjie" (small pot) here in South Africa, and much of Africa at that. They are not known as Dutch Ovens around here. That line is a mold line. Remember these things are made by the thousands around here and finish is not that important. In the rural areas that is basically the only type of cookware used. The three-legged type is more popular that the leg-less types.
Potjiekos (small pot food) is a popular form of outdoor cooking in South Africa. In its purest form it is made by frying the meat and onions, adding liquid and then layering up the vegies, slowest cookers first, so that everything is done at the same time. No stirring is allowed.
Flat bottomed pots are used to bake bread or pies.

The potjie pot is a thiner metal so things cook faster then a US made dutch oven. But if I find one in good shape for the right price I will own it, And I'm looking for the turkey roaster if anyone finds one for a good price it looks like a dutch oven bunt cake pan with a long neck and deep lid about as big around as the 12'' DO
