In the construction areas of this forum, so much is said about keeping the weight of the trailer down by using various construction methods, and on this part of the forum, we talk about loading it down with iron pots... ...Am I missing some unstated and subtle point here? Image

If you build light, it will leave room in the tow capacity for some of the heavier gear to go along. Also, you can fix anything in cast iron. Much more difficult to fix some things in that light weight aluminum or stainless cookware they sell in the camping section at Wally World. You might even find that two or three pieces of cookware is all you really need which frees up more space. Also, not every one here has low capacity tow vehicles or light weight trailers for that matter.

I just consider it "cast irony" ( and carry it my tow vehicle). So, no, you're not really missing anything-not everything we do makes sense

Yep!

A lodge 12" dutch oven weighs 7.5# You have a pot to boil in, a kettle to deep fry in a griddle (Lid) for burgers , sausage patties and eggs,an oven for baked goods, roasts, or stews. I attended our summer gathering with about 20 pounds of cast iron but I left my 2 burner propane cooktop and the propane at home along with the toaster oven and grill. They were never missed. I really didn't need the 20# bag of charcoal I did take, as I largely used coals from the campfire to cook with. So it's a trade off and only works if you have the time and patients to use the cast iron the way it was designed for slow even (good) cookin'

Maureen, I Love it!!! "Cast Irony" LOL Image

Bob Henry, When you put it all into perspective, an extra 40 lbs between the cookware and the charcoal isn't really all that much. Your food pics made me want to come to your campsite for breakfast!!! Thank you for the insight.

South West OHIO Huh?

We will be just across the ohio line in Anderson IN at Mounds State Park the last weekend in Sept. (28th - 30th). Come join us! We have several Buckeyes that regularly hop the line and camp with us. At this gathering we will be having and "end of season" pitch in Sunday breakfast and several of us are setting up the cast iron for various breakfast delights. We would be happy to have you and yours join us.

I thought building lightweight was so we could carry MORE cast iron?

It's whatever trips your trigger. I use what iron I take regularly. For me....what I find more absurd is someone that puts in a full entertainment system in a tear.

Hey, I resemble that remark.

Does it help that I'm using it to learn to paint nature scenes?

We've gone over to the dark side and we us anodized aluminum dutch ovens. All the flavor, half the weight.
