Old Griswold or Wagner.... I would buy one of these first if I could find a good one at a reasonable price.

If you are looking for a camp oven (WITH LEGS) the Griswold /Wagner ones are hard to find and the prices are usually real high. Go Lodge if you want one soon. They make a good product.

I personally look for the old old ones with a gate mark in the bottom.




It seems to me that the 1870 to 1930 ones were made of much more pure metals. The insides are almost polished while the exterior is rough as 60 grit sandpaper.





With or without legs no matter. I just add my gas stove grate under the flat bottomed ones.




Just in case you are about to tell me "that's a skillet not a dutch oven"



I say it's both !

I have found the absence of a trade name is a blessing on the old iron some folks do not have a clue what they have and they will go cheap ( I love cheap)

Remember lodge sells the camp lids seperatly so you can have a drip top and a camp oven with the same pot.

For me its a Lodge or Camp cheaf for new the main thing is to make sure the lead fits tight and don't rock.

I just bought a Lodge camp oven. They are by far the easiest to find. Our troop Scoutmaster had one last weekend that I wish I had seen before. He got it at Dick's Sporting goods. He said it was made by Camp Chef. It had the legs on the bottom and the coal ring on the lid, but it also had legs on the lid so you could invert the lid over the coals as a skillet. Inverted, the lid was about an inch deep. I have used the Lodge lids inverted, but the extra depth would be nice for some things. here is one.
