I found this 5 QT Dutch Oven at a local estate sale and could not walk on past her. The price was right!!

But what is it? Griswold??

Who is the manufacturer? :?

the marking are very basic.

On the bottom:

5 QT

B

on the inside of the lid:

8

Self Basting Lid

1288

Looks old and well made and used often.

Need to know how to best to get rid of the rust on the underside of the lid?? :NC :NC

Here are the pictures!! :pictures: :pictures: :pictures: :pictures: :pictures:

Nice find. My best guess would be a Wagner bottom. I have a few bottoms that just have numbers on them.

1288 is a #8 cover for a Griswold dutch oven. I'm going to guess the dutch oven is also Griswold. Not sure if they interchange between Wagner and Gris.

Griswold from the beginning was real proud of that cross and it was stamped everywhere.

I was leaning towards Wagner also. They put out a lot of unadorned iron before the mid 30's when they finally started stamping their wares.

There were a ton of good foundrys early on that even stole the others product to make the sand molds for their copy cat iron.
Yours is an oldie and a goodie though.

And believe it or not the food is just as good out of anybodys iron if the cook is any good, so enjoy the find !

Thanks again everyone.

What should I do to remove the rust underneath the lid?

I do not want to lose the patina on the top of the lid?

Some steel wool, and warm water?

Looks like the two Griswold skillets I bought two weeks ago.

Image

(the two on the left.)

If your lid were mine to do I would sand it with something like 100-150 grit sandpaper or better yet wet and dry emery paper. After the rust is all but gone, I would wash, rinse and dry it. Then set it handle down and get it almost white hot on a stove burner and oil coat the inside with the oil of your choice.

This is all I did to the two yard sale skillets above and in 20 minutes both looked like a million bucks. When I added them to my yard sale goods last week, I sold them for double the money. The folks that bought them went on and on about the fact they were already so well seasoned. Go figure :?

That's why I got Griswold's for $10.00.

Image

Looks like they were stored in a shed or somewhere with high humidity.

I really wish I had been thinking and got the after shots but alas I did not
