Dutch oven.. got to 2nd base..

Well I got me a cheap box store type DO last week.
I cured it with Coconut oil this morning, smoled my house out..

While it was cooling I got my Le Crueset (spelling) Skillet out,
Chopped up 8 large wild venison Sausages from a red stag I shot last month..

Also I chopped an onion from my garden, Diced 6 tomatoes from my garden, a capsicum from my garden as well.

Threw them in the skillet which was warmed up and had a bit of fat rendered from the lamb roast from sat night..

Once the sausages were browned I threw it all into the DO and deglazed my pan with a bottle of speights old dark (beer)
Added some chopped mushrooms, a tin of beans and some chick peas, a handful of rice and a handful of couscous

Anyway here is where 2nd base happened, it is pouring with rain here so I was not going to cook with charcoal :x
So I cooked it in the oven (150 deg C) for 90 min or so

So so delicious.

Next time I will go all the way, and use my charcoal briquettes

Sorry we ate it all so no pictures

:pictures:

I learned two tricks with this first attempt from my little sis.
Thicken slightly with a small amount of instant potatoes and
for extra flavor a portion of a packet gravy mix.

I had 3 guys in the pot elbow to elbow with slices of bread mopping the pot clean when we hit bottom.

Just an F.Y.I.

Cooked my 3rd meal tonight (indoors)
I browned some onions on the stove top then added 6 pork strips and browned em and turned em over
I then added a drained can of white beans and a 'sauce ' made of 1/8 cup of maple syrup, ginger ale and soy
Poured that over the top
Put lid on and baked at 150 deg C for 90 min
then removed lid and poured a little more maple syrup over the pork and grilled for 10 min or so

Delicious

Cheap and nasty DO is seasoning up well

(Frying bacon in her tomorrow for mothers day ) - more seasoning.
I might make some soda bread too

Memorial day weekend is the time to stock up on your charcoal needs for camping.

Lowes and home depot are both offering the 2 pack of 18.6 pounds each of Kingsford for less than $20.00

latest Walmart add in my area shows a 2 pack of 16.7 pound bags at 10.08 that about 30 cents a pound :D

if you do the math above its about for the 18.6 doubles that's almost 54 cents a pound

Postage to NZ will ruin that economy Sir.

Well I have done a bit in my DO both on the stove top, in the oven and on the coals.

I think she is finally seasoned. Coca cola and apricot sauce seasoning on my pork chops just wiped out!

I use it 2-3 times a week, infact it is getting to be my most used piece of hardware

I need to put a tray inside for baking bread otherwise she is awesome

You might try parchment papers and reducing the coal to about 6 bricketts on the bottom and 20 or so on top. A little aluminum foil shiny side up will help to prevent burning the top.

A cake drying rack the right size might work too

I got a tripod today
Now I need a portable fire pit. I was thinking a wok might be ideal?
