sell, trade or keep?

Bicycles for campers, rvers, or just riding around where ever you are

sell, trade or keep?

Postby oklahomajewel » Thu May 07, 2009 9:58 am

I got this women's mountain bike thru work about 4 yrs ago and have barely used it. It's got about 12+ speeds and in good condition, but now that it sat outside for a year the chain is rusty .

I don't have any urge to actually bike up a mountain, but to ride in the city with a local group, and around town and possibly this fall or next year on bigger longer rides, like for charity .. but not racing.

I've checked and could get smaller road tires, about $50. And I really prefer the straight handle bar. The other drawback - this bike does not have the quick release wheels.

SO... I've checked craigslist and found some good used road bikes, but can't pay $110 ..

What kind of price can I put on this one to sell it?
This is my bike...

have you thought about changing the handlebar, saddle and adding quick-release rims? Could probably be done less expensively than a whole bike, altho if you haven't gone thrift-store scavenging yet, that's an idea.

How heavy is that bike? Although at first blush, like Laredo said, changing the wheels sounds like an easy fix, but if it's a heavy bike, you'll never be happy with it on the road. Road bikes, even the ones with the straight bars, are light.

Here's my road bike... for example...

If I recall the weight was in the low to mid 20's.

I sugest you watch the garage sales and craigs list for a while. Might want to go to one of the bicycle shops to see what to look for brand name wise. Meanwhile ride what youve got.

Julie I will keep an eye out here for one with quick release wheels and a 21 -28 speed 26" road bike. You might have to buy a saddle you like and maybe tires ( if they might need replacement in the one I may find ). I'm always rescuing bikes from the salvage yard scrappers here. Most of these bikes are "Garage Dust Bunnies".   :? :( :o :) :worship:  :applause:

you can buy the quick release skewers without getting new rims, oil up the chain and just ride. Then if you find that you are really enjoying yourself as your fitness increases you will be ready for an upgrade bike. Enjoy

The first thing I have to mention is the fork is backwards on your bike.

skewers can be bought seperate, but without the hollow axles to put them through, they would not do much good. You could buy new axles [maybe... you may or not may not find axles to fit those wheels, and the cost would approach new less expensive wheels.

I would expect a bike like that to sell from just below to just above $100.00 new.

Are you sure it's not the handlebars that are backwards?
