Gray Haired Sisterhood

This is where the gals can have their very own discussions...

Postby nevadatear » Fri Aug 06, 2010 11:56 am

Aren't people who are 63 supposed to have gray hair? What looks strange to me is people who don't have gray hair at an age when it would be normal. I think, and this had some research support, hair color that doesn't match the experience on your face (and I don't mean wrinkles, people just plain look different at age 20 than 60) looks aging. I strongly believe gray hair is not aging. Remember it is how you feel and and act that expresses your age. How can the color of your hair change a number?

Research has shown that without gray hair people guess your age as no more than 3-4 years younger than your actual age to your actual age. So with gray hair you don't look OLDER, you just look like what you are. For some folks that is not ok, but for me it is. I am fine with my age. I am what I am and no amount of hair dye will change that I am 51 (almost 52). I am happier now in my 50s than I have ever been, so I don't want to look like I am in my 30s, that is a time I don't want to return to! And my hair is much grayer than most folks my age. Embrace the gray!

I work for a school district, where everyone looks "young" . I would suggest that I am one of only 3 women who have non-dyed hair. But I don't feel old. I think I look much better than the some of the folks much older than I with hair colors that have no gray, but don't exist in nature either 8)

I certainly think that everyone needs to do what feels right for them, but I hate that we as a culture have made what is "normal" in to "old." Such that folks in their 50s and 60s think it is no longer normal to have gray hair! and to do so is to make them feel old. We have done this to ourselves and I say it is time to stop. :applause:

Taking advantage of one's age & gray hair

Postby Blumie » Fri Aug 06, 2010 12:42 pm

Bravo, Debbie! I'm one who used to color but finally gave up. Now I sometimes capitalize on my looks when I want to exercise authority to tell the youngsters to pipe down with their car stereos, or to quit some other heinous public behavior. I can look much more imperious now, if I want. It works, too!

nope, we had to miss IRG as my son and daughter in law had their baby. We will miss Austin this fall as we already had plans to go to the American river music festival before we knew the dates. We were in Austin the last three times.

Hmm, Debbie, when will we get to meet you at one of these gatherings? And Carol, if you were at IRG, and we didn't meet, that's another gray-haired advantage: you can be completely invisible to the rest of society. I wanted to put T&TTT names and faces together, but almost utterly failed. I went unnoticed in the crowd! Gray-haired ladies could rob banks and no one would even see us.

Debbie - I am sorry that I do not remember you from Austin last Sept. April is too cold for wimpy me...... In Sept I was parked with Randy and Gaston, and had my Boxer with me.

Blumie - We could have met at IRG. I was one of the rowdy's with Grant, Dave A and Klan; we were parked in "A", up by the entrance.
So are you going to Austin next month?

Wow, what a WONDERFUL group of people, all teardroppers are !!!

OK ladies I said I would post a picture after all the color was cut off. I am now completley natural. I am embarassed to say that I dont think my gray is going to really show up in a picture. I dont have near what I thought I would. When roots were showing it seemed I had really white temples, they are fairly white but the rest isnt. People say it looks like a frost.
I will post a pic in a couple of days. (need a goood one!)

Next time someone tells you your hair looks frosted, Eunice, you can say very dramatically, "You won't believe what it cost!" and just smile.

Yup, when mine first started coming in, I was complimented on my "platinum highlights". So I stuck with that. We have been waiting and waiting....  for the pics!
