New Sewing Room - 'nother picture

Postby rebapuck » Wed Jun 30, 2010 1:27 pm

For the past year, I have been slowly working on my spare bedroom. It started with the whole house being packed up so new carpet could be put in. That, alone, took me a year. Before anything went back into this room I needed to do some stuff.

Painted the ceiling.
Installed crown moulding.
Painted walls, crown and baseboard mouldings.
Replaced electric outlets and wall switch with white ones.
Painted window trim and weatherstripped.
Installed new mini blinds.
Rasped down top of door so it would close(for the first time).

First piece of furniture in was the new queen Murphy bed.

Then my fabric stash. I took the opportunity to cull alot of yardage.

I've got new cabinets for either side of the bed on order. I'm ready to move in some folding tables and set up a machine. Somehow, I have 6 sewing machines.

A quilt is percolating in my brain and I can't wait to get at it.

Nice roomy sewing room and I love the murphy bed too giving you more room to sandwich (I always do mine on the floor).

My daughter will be home from Japan and moving to her new base in Montana August/September and taking with her some of the furniture so I can get to unclutter and get my sewing room back. I can't wait.

I like your idea using the lawyer book cases for your material. I have mine in storage box after storage box. I may utilize this idea.

I like those bookcases too. I made sure to get singles so I could stack as needed. And I can move each one by myself. They're still heavy though as they are oak.

I've had them in a few homes over the years but this is the first time they've been next to a window. I may need to cover the glass to avoid fading.

Nice!!! I am sooo jealous. I have my fabrics in rubbermaid bins and an old trunk so when I want something I have to dig for it. I love the bookcases yours are stored in. At the craft and big box stores they sell window film. That might work as a glass covering to prevent fading. Congrats on the new sewing room. I know you are going to enjoy it.

rebapuck,
Loved the murphy bed. One of those would be wonderful.
Loved the cabinets too. What a classy sewing room you have.

Sandy,
Where in Japan is your daughter stationed? My son just got stationed at Misawa in Japan. You must be looking forward to her coming back to the states.

For sewers that like forums, here is a great one just in case you're not familiar with it.

what a fabulous room! You did a beautful job. I would love to clean out my house but have to admit there is so much stuff it scares me so I never get started! I dont sew but am in the process of getting a floor loom. took a class and fell in love with weaving! wish I had been close when you culled your fabric! I need all I can get to make rag rugs.

She's been at Yokota for the past 4 years and yes, very excited she's coming back to the states.

Your son will enjoy his time there. I was able to go one summer and we traveled all around. Great Food !!

Yokota AFB was my son's first pick of bases, but where he is should prove interesting too. And I hope to take a trip over to visit too, but I may let him practice learning the language some before I go. ;)

It looks great! :applause: I bet you are feeling the peace settling over your body, mind, and soul.

I did the same thing with my office at home. My mother use to tell me to clean my room, that it would make me feel better. She was right. Getting old papers and files thrown out and everything else organized was both exciting and somehow calming.

I plan to take one room at a time. Clean out and redecorate. It's been 15 years since I moved in and everything is rather tired.

I'm not quite a packrat, but close. I'm ready to let go of stuff and find my local Freecyle group is a good way to do that.

The unfinished cabinets I had painted finally came. It was a tight fit. In fact, I had to trim 1/4" off the moulding of the right one to get it past the closet trim. Can't tell though.

I've filled them both with my sewing/quilting/crafty stuff. Not shown in the picture are my four Singer Featherweights displayed on the tops.
