Scale Model Kit?

Postby DaniRo620 » Sun Sep 29, 2013 7:33 pm

Hey ladies!

I'm new to the entire world of teardrops, but captivated by all I'm seeing on here already. My boyfriend went on a road trip this summer and wants to build his own at some point...he doesn't have the finances/time as of right now, but I thought as a motivation/inspiration birthday gift, I might be able to find him a scale model kit. I'm searching hobby shops and websites and ebay, etc, but having very little luck. Anyone know of any DIY scale model TD kits out there?

Thanks!

Danielle...I don't know of any "kits" ready to assemble for a teardrop. It might be an idea however, to give him a gift certificate for a local hobby shop so that he can pick up some balsa wood, wheels. paints etc...so that he can actually design and build a scale model of what he envisions for a trailer. That way, it gets his gears started about what he actually wants in a trailer. Modeling is a great way to begin the process, and you can be a part of it as well, with your input. Just an idea.

PS...I realize it was directed towards ladies, so take it for what it's worth. Doug

I've never seen kits for trailers. Doug has the right idea. Let the guy design his own. Could work out some bugs before the real thing....Plus, it would be a great Christmas tree ornament.

Danielle:

Confession: I'm a guy lurking on the gal's section.

I'd highly recommend you buy Steve Fredrick's Teardrop Shop Manual for $60. It's a PDF. Kinko's or some other print shop might print it off for you for $25. http://www.campingclassics.com/shopman05.html There's a review thread about it here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=6397

From a guy's standpoint, if that manual doesn't get his heart thumping and his tool hand twitching, nothing will.

After I downloaded it, it pushed me over the edge and my 5x10 is about done –and it solved many construction challenges.

Nice find George, that'll get the juices going!

Here's the one I bought...

It's discontinued, but they still have a few in stock!

George,

If you're talking about the Slumbercoach, it's preassembled. It's pretty nice too!

Thanks for all the ideas, everyone! At this point I'm thinking I may find a set of generic plans, pre-cut some balsa for him, and then give him the pre-cut balsa exterior, some sheets of uncut balsa to design an interior, and some acrylics. It'll be a challenge for me to scale down plans but my rudimentary drafting skills should be enough. I hope.

Any advice/further ideas/inspiration? You've all been so helpful!

For scaling the plans, just print out the plans and blow them up on a copier to the size you want. Then you just cut from the plan and trace onto you balsa. Another option would be to print out your plan and draw a grid on the print. Then draw a larger grid on another sheet to scale up or a smaller grid to scale down. the size of the grid does not matter, but it needs to have the same number of squares in both directions. Then just redraw putting lines in the same squares as the original.

Was a guy on the r/c plane forums that wrote a java script called scale and tile. It would take PDF plans and scale them up to any size and print tiled pages that you taped together to get the full size part. Worked pretty good.

You can down load the benroy plans off the forum for free then get some 1/2 inch foam and cut away and use glue and make it a little larger and lots of room to make mistakes and changes. The different styles of the side profile is enough to drive you crazy!!! You can make all sorts of changes without the "cost" of the balsa wood. Good luck,

Mary C. :)
