This was todays progress. A good buddy was kind enough to give me a hand today. I was having trouble figuring out the rafter layout and it was good to have a second set of eyes on the problem.
It seems to be going quickly, but as with any building project, the visible progress seems to slow way down when the shell is complete.

I am going to be proud and arrogant to a fault and claim this as an original thought.

I really didn't want to give up the floor space but I couldn't see hanging a useless pocket door for some privacy for the potty.

SO !...............

so with a door on each side of the opening I gave up 6 sq ft of floor space and gained about 40 cubic feet of storage.

I toyed with facing one to access the kitchen and the other to the bath area.
I later decided that they both needed to face the bath area.
I will use one for clothing and linen and the other for a medicine cabinet and other paper goods and bulk supplies.

Today was kind of a laid back day, but I am feeling good about the progress. My bride and I got the rafters tied down with hangers. My son helped me hang the ladder frames for the tongue end overhang. Then we framed in the gable ends, covered with house wrap and sheathing/siding, and cut out the window openings.
Things are going farely smooth considering my lack of pre-engineering.
My plan is to get the roof trimmed and felted later this week and measure for the metal that will cover it. While I'm waiting for metal I will get the loft floor framed up and build the support wall to carry the front end of the shallower pitched roof. Windows should be here in another week as well as the Hobbit woodstove. I'm very excited about that!

On the issue of venting the roof...I struggled with this one for a while. I was back and forth on spray foam w/o venting vs pancake method with venting. The venting won. So then how do I vent with a 1" gap between outer wall and fascia. I had a roll of "pet defence" screen laying around (mom had a squirrel problem a while back) and figured it was worth a try. I compared it against alum. screen at the store and reasoned that what I had would be more flexible and last at least as long as anything else readily available.
I cut the screen into 6" strips and stapled to the outside face of the fascia. I then ripped a clear cedar 2x4 into strips on the table saw and used the strips to push the screen up behind the fascia where it was nailed in place. The fascia was then covered with painted aluminum fascia. The whole deal turned out pretty good IMO, but you be the judge.

The roof is in felt and the metal has been ordered. It shouldn't be too long before I'm working inside (with the windows open). WooHoo!
If you wondering about the Grace ice and water placement...I had a partial roll left and decided to put it in the area that I figured would be most at risk for water intrusion. Once those little end wall sections are framed in, they'll be covered with what I have left.

I don't think there was a better feeling all during my tiny caboose build than the day I got the rubber roof in place.
Up till then I saw my hard work in jeopardy .

Congratz ! on getting the lid (almost) on.

At least its waterproof !

Thank you
I keep wondering if it would be better to have had more expertise in framing prior to doing this build (I've only built a couple of homes) or if making it up as I go is providing a more cathartic experience.

My roof truss design was an off the wall idea.

Image

There was added a series of 2x2 filler pieces top and bottom to draw the 2 plys together to act as one.
They are not shown yet in this picture. I also added an 1 1/2 fill of blue foam insulation as well.

I just recently got a glowing nod from a structural engineer as tribute to my "plywood box beam" as he called them.

So yes sometimes making it up as you go can be fun.

It took me a while to get this section framed with all the angles. I sheathed the outside with 1/2 ply and covered with ice and water. After the roof is done, i'll cover the wall section with t1-11.
I bent up a piece of fascia to cover the soffit. There will only be an inch or so visible after all the metal trim pieces and siding are in place. Many interlocking pieces will hopefully prevent water intrusion.

I had these two windows left from previous projects so they were incorporated here. The Pella is definately the nicer of the two and will be above the kitchen sink. The vinyl one was a pain! I ended up remaking the rough opening due to it being sized larger than the labels RO requirement. GRRR. It has integrated j channel but we'll size the trim to fit inside of it.
The rest of the windows will be delivered tomorrow and fingers crossed they'll be in by days end. Wish me luck.
Thanks for reading
