Cool project.

Are you going to tow it with this?

Well I finally got a little weather protection for the plywood on the roof of the depot. Only in Indiana can you scrape off an 1 1/2 of wet sloppy snow at 10 am and have the roof dry and ready to wrap by 1 P.M. in 48 degree weather. My roof mouse and I finished screwing down a few spots that we missed and installed a new DuPont underlayment product instead of the old roofing felt. It is installed and strapped down with 1 1/2"wide rips of 1/2" plywood. We were fighting for time as the rain was headed our way. This was Sunday and by early evening it was pouring and rained all day Monday. It was so wet and sloppy up on the hill I managed to get my truck stuck not once, not twice, but 3 times. Thank God the little 8n tractor was up to the task and got me pulled out. So the roof is dried in and ready for steel. Finally got my 160 sq ft of car siding and the 120 sq ft of pvc car siding look alike unloaded off of my 5 x 10 flat bed trailer and under the storage shed off of the tractor barn. We even took a few minutes since the tractor was out to extract 2 dead fall trees that were leaning over into the healthy trees. They were about to fall into the road so we chained on and dragged them out and over near the wood pile to be cut up and be added to the stash of firewood .
Watched it rain all day Monday and cussed the drizzly grey day ! :(

Was leaving work yesterday and there were two wall panels tossed out as miss built scrap. I asked the boss and he said it cost more to tear them apart than to just junk them and I was welcome to them. So with a hammer in hand I popped them apart and wound up with 10 2x4's 12 foot long and 15 studs. not quite $70.00 worth of lumber for a smile...... I love cheap !

The weather will be very nice sunday and I hope to close in the pooch outs and get the windows and doors installed.

Well cheap is the word.... The free 14" rips of plywood became 7" rips for drop siding. We gave them 5 1/2 " show and put up my absolutely free siding as gable fill. I realize plywood is not the best medium for drop siding but the price was right FREE !

Where did that 2 weeks go ! Oh I remember the power company came thru and derailed me. They took down about 6 trees and topped 6-8 more. I had the land lady ask them to leave the wood ( What was I thinking )

I came on scene two days after the fact for clean up. I spent Friday the 2nd toteing 4 trailer loads of wood to the back pasture near the wood pile. Saturday I picked up my helper and we spent 2 days splitting firewood. I was spotted gathering the wood and one of the neighbors stopped and offered me the use of his trailer mounted splitter and believe me I am most grateful. My last day off Monday was a going to the doc day that led to a lab visit with all the sick people. Well by Thursday I had the damnedest cold ever. Friday thru Monday was a big wash out with no progress on anything. Back to work Tuesday ( today) and feeling good for all but a persistant runny nose. Sometimes life gets in the way of tiny house building .

Well the wood stockpiling continued. We moved and stacked 4 heaping trailer (5x10) loads of the split wood. We have it about 1/2 cleaned up and have a nose high stacked wall running about 30 feet. I did get my two salesman sample windows installed over the shelf bed in the back wall of the Depot. A lot of clean up and raking of deadfall branches and the tops off of the cut wood allowed for a 2 day giant campfire. Even took an hour and stripped out the chicken coop and gave the girls all new bedding. The old poopie straw went out to the garden. I picked up my onion sets and seed potatoes but my helper convinced me I was about 2 weeks premature in putting them out so I put that project on hold. Hell I even found time to finally find the bed in the poor old pickup. It really need a good cleaning. I can continue to putt along on stacking the wood but the main focus next weekend will be getting the two pooch outs on the depot studded and the window and door installed. I am one step closer to being weathered in. After that I start on the electric. I tripped over 4 more salesman's sample windows just like these that are going in the flea market fliver. The two I installed in the back wall of the depot are just like the 8 pane divided ones in the center in this pic.

bobhenry wrote:Last Monday I filled in all the voids between the 4x4's with the 4" polyisocyanurate. When I purchased the 20+ sheets of 4x8 4" thick insulation I noticed that tiny red ants seem to love nesting between the damp sheets. I have been looking for a good and green friendly answer to the possibility of re-invitating them back when my floor is placed over the insulation blocks. I will be foaming the smaller gaps between the 4x4's and the insulation and then sprinkling some borax over the face just before placing the 2 layers of plywood sub flooring down. This is the reasoning for my choice.......

Borax Basics

Borax is another name for sodium tetraborate decahydrate, a naturally occurring compound that is mined in the California desert as well as other places around the world. It has many uses, and is commonly sold as a cleaning and laundry aid for household as well as industrial use. Borax is also highly recommended as a relatively safe method of insect control. It can be used indoors or outside, but must be reapplied if it gets wet.

Uses

Borax is very effective in killing and controlling various types of insects, including fleas, silverfish and beetles. It is one of the most effective methods of controlling cockroaches in and around the home as long as it is applied properly, according to the University of Kentucky. Borax will also control ants and grain weevils. It has the added benefit that its residual action is more effective against newly hatched insects than most chemical sprays.

Application

Apply a thin dusting of powder in areas where insects such as roaches are a problem. When they walk through the dust, it clings to their legs and is eventually ingested, poisoning the insect. It also has a dessicating effect and can cause pests to die of dehydration. If ants encounter borax, they will typically be repelled rather than crawl over it. Some commercial insect poisons use borax as their main ingredient. You can make your own bait by mixing borax with honey or corn syrup to form a paste and leaving it where insects can find it.

Have you heard of diatamaceous earth? It can be used thst way on bugs, and also taken internally for health for humans and other animals.

3/26 Spent 6 hours cutting and fitting the insulated zip panel around the installed windows and the rear is now weather tight. I do however need to build an insulated removable panel to maintain a way to assess the water tank if needed. Frank and I spent 3 hours head scratching and ripping studding with appropriate angles to frame in the damn bump outs at the wheel wells. What a pain in the butt. It is now framed and ready for sheathing and the door is ready to be installed as well. Even got back to the front and reinstalled the front door correctly after throwing it in a hole to keep out the weather 2 weeks ago. I was too tired to even snap a couple of updated pics. I will owe them to you till next week.

April Fools ! all four inches of this damn white fluffy stuff. Enough is enough.

Before the blizzard arrived my help and I filled in some missing siding added door thresholds and installed the 15 lite door over the pooch out (side door). We pulled and re-installed the 2 long windows and made a removable hatch cover for the rear to be able to remove and/or work on the water storage tank and piping. My son and the grand girls stopped in and visited. They gathered eggs from the chickens and fed them some produce goodies. Got to play with the dogs and visit with papaw for a couple hours.
The Depot with no bones showing now , is starting to look like a tiny house. :D

My son Scott and Piper and Olivia with some old fart in a farmer tuxedo......

Re: DEPOT

Postby bobhenry » Tue Apr 03, 2018 1:17 pm

Monday Frank and I waded in the 4" of new snow about 1/2 of the morning and by noon it was slick and slimy. We constructed the removable panel for the water tank at the rear. We installed the missing headers above the front and side door ,installed the side door and moved the long windows out past the siding and readied them for trim. Three sides are complete and weathered in ready for the final exterior wall treatment. On the way home we decided to dumpster dive for produce for the chickens. Well bummer the dumpster was empty, empty, empty. However they had tossed out 3 nice 3 door lockers. (What is a depot without lockers) I tossed them in the truck and off we went. I priced the European style hinges when I got home $6.34 each 9 doors 2 hinges each
($6.34 x 18 = $114.12) It seemed that the hinge adjustment screws on a couple of the doors backed off and those doors were flopping so out in the trash they went. I love free.
