We're not dead here!

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Postby WarPony » Fri Jan 02, 2009 4:06 pm

Well, I bought two Coleman lanterns this morning. One is a 220J (5 of '77) and the other is a 220K (12 of '79). Dumped the old fuel out, burned in the new mantles and put some new fuel in. I started with the 220K first and it lit but there's a flame at the top of the mantles so I turned it off and tried the 220J. It's worse than the K is!!! There's raw fuel running down the brass tube and I had fire blowing out the top vents so I turned it off and moved it away from the house. I think I'm going to have to take them apart and do some work. Kripes, I 'bout blew my head off!!!!!!!!!!

I did use that website Hodder has listed for the Coleman parts so I'll get a list of pieces I need and go from there.

Jeff....it's real common to get a lot of crud up in the mixing chamber in the top. Spider webs bugs etc... I'd bet that with a good cleaning, you'd have them running with no real problems. I've had some real beaters and got-m-goin' I don't bother trying to fire one up till I've gone through it, gives you an idea of what you have to work with. Doug

Doug, how do you get that mixing chamber apart? It looks like it is riveted together or do you just take the brass screens out of the mantle wing dings and blow the crud out?

Jeff, a quick look at the parts list for a 220J shows that the burner tubes and caps were available as replacement parts. I've got the original info that came with my lantern. So they must have threaded in or were replaceable. I haven't taken it apart so I'm no expert. I bought it new in 76 and it has always worked. I'd think that if you pulled the caps, and blew it out with an air hose it would be OK. On a lantern that has been sitting for quite a while, I'd do a complete tear apart on it and cleaning. What did the fuel look like that came out of the tank? Any crud in it? Doug

Oh yeah, there was some stuff in it. I have most of it tore down now and am finding some crap in the pickup tube that goes down in the tank. I don't have a compressor here at home but I've got white vinegar and have the brass stuff soaking in it right now. I think I'll clean everything up as best as I can and put it back together and see if that helps. If not, I'll take both of them to work and soak all the stuff in carb cleaner.

Thing is Dave....it's still got over a day to go....I don't think we've seen the top yet. I did notice today that prices are down right now or so it appears, maybe the holiday thing and people aren't paying attention. I picked up a 1940 Coleman stove for 10$ today. Yeah it needs a resto. but it's straight and all the parts are there. I think it'll be a great stove for the price. Sears stuff typically brings more bucks. Doug

It is the green lantern driving up the price. The stove is worth $20-30 & the blue lantern is $25-35.

I have been watching the same thing. It looks like you do not have to do anything to make them work. But then you will have no history with the stuff. I for one am going to have to find them in a yard sale when you add shipping to most of them they are out of my price range of free to $10.00. But then why do I need more of anything if I already have two or three. Like stoves. I have five now but they are all not the same. Hey spring will be here soon. I am sure that lots of people will have big yard sales with things going as they are.

I'm with you Kevin...I'd much rather buy one and have the satisfaction of knowing that I rebuilt/restored it to make it what it is. Somehow, I'm sure food will just taste better off it....hopefully it's not the paint cooking! Doug

What's special about the green lantern? Is it special or that it appears unburned?

I'm not a Sears lantern person Dave, but I think it's a combination of the 2. Doug

It is the condition of the green lantern. It is a 1972 lantern. The Coleman version is commonly referred to as a Turd because it is brown.

Settled on this one, Dietz Comet $7

Nice finds Dennis....are you planning on hauling them in the trailer with you? I've been thinking that one fueled up with citronella oil might be perfect for the bugs....can that be done? Doug
