Joining the cult....

Postby Joanne » Fri Jan 16, 2009 10:55 pm

Hi all,

Fine. Just fine. I'll join the cult.... another cult actually. Teardrops. Cast Iron. And now this. Vintage Camping Equipment (previously known as old crap)

My Dad left me a couple of pieces and then purchased one for myself.

Here's a photo of my new lantern. It's a mid 70's 228H. Nothing special but it's in nice condition and will make a good camping lantern. No "shelf queen" here. It's going to be used!

Image

This is a 502 that Dad had. We have tried to get it to run, but it just won't keep running. I'll try again to get it running.

Here's the one that I really want to get running. I just got it out of storage and am looking forward to getting it put together. The one thing that is missing is the grate so I'm going to have to track one down. I don't have any idea where I can find one. Any thoughts on where to locate a grate??

It's a 425B that my Dad bought in the late 50s or early 60s (I believe).

Welcome to the DARK side Joanne....nice 228 you got! On the 425B, Steve E has an old stove he said I could have. It's got a cut up box on it, but the grate is there. I could get you the grate, that might need to be modified to fit, but would work fine. I could re-dimension it to fit and send it to you if you would like. It's not the correct grate however, that stove had straight ribs in the grate, this one has an area that is centered for the burners. I'm no purist on that sort of thing. Knowing your welding capabilities, it wouldn't be a tough one for you to do. It also appears that yours was stored with a leaky gasket. It was manufactured from 54-60 and again in 62. It's a great stove and probably wouldn't take much other than time, elbow grease, some paint to get it in prime shape.

The little 502 probably needs to be taken apart and cleaned, chances are, there is some crud in the system that is blocking the fuel in it. Date should be stamped on it I think, but they were '65.

  Nice stuff! Doug

PS...check your local stores, you can get some 3/16 cold roll rod and weld up your own grate if you don't want a modifed one.

Hey yard sales are coming soon and I am sure that you could get a old stove to make the grate fit. Congrads on getting your dad`s camping stuff out and planning on fixing it up. I know that with a little work you will have everything working soon.

You found my lantern I lost.... :D

I really like the blue Coleman/Sears stuff. The one is a couple years new than the one I have.

If you want to re-paint it. Use Dupli-color Chrysler engine blue. Is is an almost perfect match to the original color.

Also the decal can be purchased from Fred Kuntz. The link is in the sticky thread.

I joined the led cult. Got this lantern. When I take it out, I pretend to pump it up before I flip the switch on...... I may paint it green.

Welcome aboard Joanne! That is a great collection you have there! Aren't those 228's cool! about that 425b It appears that it was put away with regular gasoline in it, Man what a drag. Hopefully the valve didn't leak any of that into the generator. I have a really nice 228 lantern someone did that to. once it turns black and dries out that can be like loctite on all the parts! I would screw the valve/generator off of the tank, remove the knob and soak it in carburetor cleaner over night before trying to move the valve or remove any part of the generator. I found this out the hard way and am now replacing the valve in that lantern. Also install the proper size pipe plug in the opening where the valve came out of the font and fill it with the cleaner also. If you don't get all of that nasty gum out of there you will have nothing but a headache out of your stove. I don't use anything but Coleman fuel in my equipment for this very same reason. Just the other day I fired up a lantern that had been laying around for 15 years i know with Coleman fuel in it. After sputtering to life a little slow it cleared up and ran great on what was in the tank! When I checked the fuel before lighting it up the fuel was just as clear as the day it was put in!
Good luck on getting those stoves running, but most of all have fun tinkering with them!

I'm Inn

Postby Harold Sultzbaugh » Sat Jan 17, 2009 6:48 pm

Okay I am ready for this one. I have most of my family and Scout
stuff (from '50s and '60s)--from pup tents to kerosene lanterns
ans my stuff from '60s and '70s al of which seems to be collectable?
I still use a Coleman lantern(will check mod.num) and a two burner
stove.I have a backpacker Coleman stove and a similar thing about
twice that size. I'll dig it all out and report back. That backpacker stove
has been all over the country. Reminds me of Scouts, cold mornings,
wet firewood and over in corner--me! making that first cup of coffee!
I also have a Coleman lantern that looks like a gas lantern, but burns
kerosene- anybody know anything about that one?
