Its used to hold down the thermostat housing if you break the bolt or if you need it for a manifold flange. :thumbsup:

Is it some sort of temporary clamp for an exhaust manifold collector flange joint?

I doubt it would work on most thermostat housings. but............

Ok, now I'll explain since Lisa (the girl) :roll: got the closest.
If you break a exhaust manifold stud/bolt at the flange and you can't get to it to drill it or heat it and you need to get it back together now you use this gizmo to clamp it together. The set screw gets adjusted into the hole on the manifold and the big nub fits into the hole on the flange, tighten it up and tighten the lock nut and you are ready to go. :thumbsup:

My father-in-law has used it on thermostat housings....

and I have to confess....the above answer was typed by Honeyman, who has been a mechanic forever (even now is still a part time mechanic).
He said they don't use those anymore.

I'm sure it would work on some of them but I know it wouldn't work on most Fords because the housing bolts in the manifold. But anything with exposed bolt ears I'm sure it would work on.
