used my leftovers...

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

used my leftovers...

After 4 tears I found I had quite a few scraps of mohagany ply and lumber sitting around. They don't all match, but outside of the hardware, I have nothing into them but time. Still need to make one to hold a 228, then I can swap any lantern into a box for camping. Hopefully I can keep these lanterns and stove looking good for another 50+ years. Doug

That's more cabinet work than I got on my Tear!!!! Very nice, and a worthy endeavor!!!! Have you cooked a waffle on that 500 yet? I finally found a rusty highbase waffle iron to work on...now I need a matching ugly 500!!!

Good job, Doug!! Do you have any pics of the insides? I've always wondered if you had padding or somethig inside.

I might be able to get a pic of the stove box Jeff, the lantern ones are deep. I make a couple of semi-circular wood pieces to capture the base. Pad the base in a few places with felt, (the lantern base makes an indentation in the felt and holds it in place) and then some felt at the sides where the ventilator might touch. The rest is just painted hunter green.

Dave....waffles this Sunday AM. Doug

Here ya go Jeff....good thing I looked...I'm missing the piece of felt on the back side of this box. The bail keeps the lantern off the 2 sides, so it only needs a piece in front and back. Hope it all works. I've been toting them in the original cardboard boxes for years. Jeremy's are much more official with protection. Doug

Very nice woodworking Doug  . So... how do you choose which one/ones you'll take camping?
I still need to buy boxes for my two lanterns. :D Danny

Really cool Doug!!!!!
I'd think about grinding down the ends of those bolts and covering the nuts with felt so you don't damage something pulling the lantern in and out of the box........

Of course, they may not be in the way at all.........

Good point John...the ones in the front that attach the latch are done like you mentioned. At the very bottom of the pic you can see some felt. The ones in the rear are off to the side enough that nothing can get into them. Ideally I needed 5/8" screws and I got a mix since I was digging in my storage "dishpan" of unsorted nuts and bolts, you know...the stuff that ends up on the bench and I'm/you're too lazy to sort them all out.
