Question regarding 200A - Pics Added

Postby Rock » Wed Feb 25, 2009 11:42 am

I bought a 1971 200A with an amber Pyrex Made in USA globe. The globe has almost 1/4" up/down movement with the ventilator screwed down tight. Is this normal?

Looking at the globe supplier in the sticky above, of the 2 "belly" globes it looks like the 200 takes the smaller one, so I have to believe it's the right size. So is there a spring or something I'm missing? I think my new Coleman lantern has a spring in the bottom of the frame to keep the globe from bouncing around.

Any info is appreciated. I'm looking forward to the re-build.

What you are discribing is correct. They should have a little play in the globe. Also loosen the vent screw slightly. You don't want it tight to alow for thermal exspansion.

What color is your 200A? Can you post a picture?

Thanks Jeremy. I'll get a pic up tonight or tomorrow.

It's been in a junk store right by my house and I've been eyeballing it since before this sub-forum started. It's not in great shape but not beat up either. I liked the amber globe and since it's a made in US globe that's pretty much worth the $18 I think. I got it to rebuild for fun but also I just wanted a 1 mantle lamp. I usually keep the light level low at camp.

BTW the lantern is red on red. Pic to follow.

Offer them $10 for it. Maybe you can get it somewhere in the middle. Te reason I ask on the color is some time in the early 70's that they swtche the 200A from red to green. Green ones are more rare.

And if you find a mint green one, it means somebody stole mine........

Can I hijack this thread a bit? My 200 A sputters when I try to light it. There seems to be too much gas coming out of the generator. I took the generator apart, and the cardboard tube is completely soaked and falling apart.. So, I guess I need a new generator, right? Was wondering if the fuel/air tube could be part of the problem, and how do I check it? I' hate to buy a new generator and have it ruined the same way. Any ideas?

An now back to our regular broadcasting................

John, take the generator off & open the valve, if you get good fuel flow, you just need the generator. If not you will need to pull the valve & clean the F/A tube & stretch the spring slightly. Also spint he tip cleaner a couple time & leave it in the down position before you light the lantern. Once you get it lit, spin it again.

Also make sure you do not have any blockage it the air tube & mixing chamber.

Hijacks welcome, John. That's how we all learn.

Here's my 200A, vintage water jug and a cool little porcelain pot with a chromed lid.

The Aladdin in the background has been around for awhile.

And for the record I don't hate Hodder. What a cool hobby.

Thanks for all the help/inspiration.
