Problem w/my 228E valve stem ass'y

Postby WarPony » Tue Mar 03, 2009 9:05 pm

I purchased said lantern off of Ebutt last week, recieved it and promptly tore it down so I could order the needed parts to make it work again. Well, when I was in the process of disassembly, I noticed that someone had tried to break it down and managed to mash the hole where the valve cleaner rod goes into the main part of the body. There was a small wad of Teflon tape in there to try and seal it but apparently it didn't work because there was some soot under the frame between the frame and fount indicating that a small fire had occured.

Anyway, I made a precheck of all the fittings and fuel is spraying out of that joint so I never lit the lantern.

Here's what I've tried to "fix" it:
* Aviation sealer in the threads
* Aluminum foil in the threads
* Copper wire

Nothing worked and there seems to be no replacement parts of the age of the lantern......... build date of 10-53.

Does anyone have a suggestion on a way to get it sealed up. I might take it to work and fit a copper gasket to see if that will do the trick. I hate to give up on this one, it's in really decent shape for a 55-year old lantern.

It's the cleaner valve assembly. Gimme a few and I'll see if the pic shows the damage.

Dude, you are the man!! I totally missed that part of OTY's website. I emailed Robert about my problem but haven't recieved a reply back but now I know what to order.

I'm going to need the "T" part with all the guts that go with it because the "T" part is what's damaged.

Thanks, J-Bird!! :applause:

I just got an email from Bob about parts for my handy gas plant saying he will be out of town until the 15th so I wouldn't get in a hurry to hear from him. Patients grasshopper!

The 15th!?!?!?! Geez, he must be heading to Padre for Spring Break...

I got the problem fixed by filing the end of the "T" part flat and then adding a copper gasket to seal it up. I know it is cobbling it but I wanted to get it burning. I've used it the past two nights while I BBQ'd and have had no problems at all.

I'll end up ordering a new assembly in the future so I'll have one but the old dog is barking for now!!

Did you ever get in touch with Warren? He was here in Washington state last weekend.

I haven't yet been real busy. Bob just shot me that email after I hadn't had the time to get pics for him. I'll send him an email tonight.

Warren is in West Virginia I think. Super nice guy. I think his prices will be cheaper & the shipping would be less. He is more about the hobby than making money like Bob.

He is a collector. He may have some part for Mark's Handy Gas Plant. Someone referred me to him.
