Coleman Stove Bought off EBay for .99 cents

Stove Rebuild

Postby PresTx82 » Wed Apr 22, 2009 8:51 pm

Here’s my Coleman 425 stove project that I just completed:

The case was more pitted than it appeared in the EBay picture. Lots of oil, grease and rust. I scrubbed everything down and did a lot of sanding.

I used Rustoleum black car primer as the first coat. The primer filled in a lot of the pitting, but not all of it. Then of course the Krylon Hunter Green for the case.

For the burners I used Rustoleum silver high heat paint.

The tank was sanded down and sprayed with Rustoleum Metallic Caramel. I couldn’t find the Rustoleum “Copper” until I had already painted it. The Caramel color though is a very good substitute. The copper paint I think would of looked better, but this one looks good too!

My valve assembly was bent and I was able to bend it back in shape. Also the spring was frozen inside the generator tube. I was not able to get it out by soaking in liquid wrench for days, blow torching, extreme force, etc. As a last ditch effort I used electrolysis, and then and only then was I able to pull the spring out, BUT I DESTROYED THE SPRING BY STRETCHING IT! At least I tried. I have a new one I just ordered.

Here's the refurbishing pics: :R

Not bad for .99 cents on EBay and $15.00 worth of spray paint (and an $8.00 generator).

Everything is done but the "Official Lighting". 8)

Mark, the stove looks great, nice job!! I also want one of those round copper tank stoves to "play" with. Rummage season is finally kicking in here, so maybe I'll get one soon! Also, thanks for the tip about soaking the brass in vinegar. Works pretty good. As bad as my lantern pieces were, they turned out really nice! Thanks again!

What a nice stove!! I wouldn't worry on the tank paint, not a big deal to change if you ever want to. I did one in a hammer finish. Next step....build a fire in it. Doug

I didn't have a generator yet as its still on order, BUT I took the tank and generator off my other stove and tested it out and it works better than the my first one. SWEET. I did have some paint come off on one burner. I'll have to sand it some more and touch it up.

Now, I have an old 426 three burner (got it at a garage sale) that's all greasy, oily, dirty and in need of some love. NEXT!
