Model 431 Camp Stove - Info???

Postby Nor'East Coaster » Tue Mar 31, 2009 2:38 pm

Got this one from a lady who was moving about a year ago for $20 - just replaced the original generator rod with a different (earlier?) type, as recommended by Eric of Eric's Reel Shop in Nova Scotia, who is an excellent source of parts and advice and a good person to do business with. Seems to work just fine now...

Out of curiosity - I did a quick check of the Coleman 1965 catalogue mentioned in another post - no mention of a Model 431...is it a later model, or a Canadian designation...any info would be appreciated...

The original generator rod is resting on the grill...the replacement is the brass jobbie I remember from the camp stoves my parents used, and used, and used...

I'm not familiar with the 431. I'm sure its out there because you indeed own one.

It looks just like the 425 series except for the wind flaps which are cut different. That's the only difference I see.

Not sure either. I posted this on the Coleman forum. I will let you know what I find out.

Here is a response from the Coleman forum:

That is a Candian 431 the suscsessor to the 4M or the Tourist 2 burner stove.

Is it the same as the later 4M's Except it utilizes the Aluminum Easi-Lite system of fuel valve/Air tube.

It like the Easi-Lite Lantern uses an O-ring to seal the fuel valve shaft.

This is a later 431 made some time in the 80's.

It would be a good idea to rebuild the aluminum fuel valve before use.

The 431 stoves did not suffer quite as badly with seal failuers as the Easi Lite lanterns. And when they do leak they tend not to go poof up in smoke quite as easly like the lanterns.

They are a decent stove and I use a 431 as my user. They put out big heat in relatively small package Not quite as good as a 4M but still decent.

Your fuel valve has been changed to either a 431A brass fuel valve or the earlier 4M part, this was A common service switch to repair leaking Aluminum fuel valves.

The 4M, Tourist and 431 are comparible to the U.S 425

Matthew

Hope that helps.

...for the information. I did find a few on-line references....

This links to a Canadian Dept. of Defense , circa 1984 booklet from a Basic Cold Weather Training Course - Table of contents lists info re the Model 431 stove...

and a site that sells parts shows...

I appreciate the time folks took to answer my query. The swap on the generator rod is indeed as Matthew describes - Eric strongly recommended using the earlier (?) model...
