Coleman 220D help needed

Postby TomW » Mon Apr 13, 2009 6:39 pm

I have purchased an Coleman 220D that is in good shape physically but it appears the generator is clogged up from someone leaving what appears to be unleaded gas in it over a long period of time.

The lantern ran once after I received it but did not burn regularly. The burn was solid but did not increase with increased pressure in the tank.

Stripped down the lantern to the basic parts, cleaned out all of the tarnish and gunk with carb. cleaner. The needle in the generator was tarnished and I cleaned with wet emory paper. Everything appears normal, good pressure, etc. but not much vapor coming through the generator.

I have called Coleman and have been on hold for hours with no answer and can not get any reply from my e-mails. Coleman shows they have parts for the 220E, F, G, K, L models.

From pictures of the 220D and the 220E the only thing that appears to have changed is the hat. I checked the G, K, L models, the generator is the same for all of these models.

Does anyone have experience with the 220 series lanterns and do you feel or know if a generator from a 220E fit a 220D?

220B-220K all took the same generator. You can probably pick one up at WalMart or a local hardware store. Might try using part # 220E5891. I think that is the official Coleman number for it. Doug

Here is the manual.

The replacement for the T-44 is 220E-5891.

I have a 228 that my brother just brought home from an estate auction. The fuel control rod in the air and fuel stem that goes down into the tank is stuck all the way down and will let only vapors into the generator. Sounds like a possibility on yours also. Then again a bad generator could cause that also..

I checked the main valve by backing off the generator nut about 1/4 turn. Liquid fuel came out of the stem leading up to the generator. I will check it again to make sure.

I finally received an e-mail back from Coleman indicating the parts for the 220E-K would fit my 220D. They also confirmed that the B 49 stamp indicated the unit was built in Feb. 1949.
:)
Thanks for the help
