Gas pressure appliance question(s)

What do you guys (and gals) use to polish your brass parts?? Being basically cheap, I've been using something readily available in my house.... ketchup thinned down with a little water and a tooth brush. I don't know if it's detrimental to the brass or not, but they sure do shine when I'm done.

Also, would a thin coat of clear coat after they are cleaned and polished help them stay that way, or am I spinning my wheels on that??

If it stops raining long enough to get to the work shed to do some painting (power has gone out twice so far this morning), I might be able to post pics of my first two re-builds later this evening.

Here's what I've used in the past for polishing brass. In combination the two products work really well.

I use vinegar and soak them. Then hit them with a little 0000 steel wool. Make sure you do not put any steel in with the brass or the brass will turn pink.
