My lanterns

Postby racerrandy » Sun Aug 30, 2009 7:36 pm

Well I have been lurking for some time and finally decided to post. I have quite a few lanterns and after reading about all of yours I thought I would check my #'s and see what I have.

242 - this has no date on it. The bottom is clean, its just rough plated and no markings of any kind.

220D - built 3 of 47

200A - built 8 of 52 with a black painted band. Don't know why its that way.

220E - built 7 of 62

military lantern with the divided globe. Just says 1965 on the bottom. I can't find a model #

200A - 1/67

220F - 9/69

220H - 2/74

220J - 6/75

220J - 11/76

220J - 11/77

200A - 8/79

288A - 8/88

226 - 7/94

I will try to get them all together for a pic, some are really nice while others have been used and abused.

Welcome aboard Randy....the 242....is there any letter on the frame rest? Sometimes numbers on the base are very difficult to locate....I've got one that I can only speculate the date on. the military is a 252, and the 200A with the black band is a very desirable lantern to have although I don't have any numbers or dates on it, gotta find one then I'll get my education. Sounds like you have quite a collection! And yeah....put up some pics. Doug

Thanks.

The 242 has no letter behind it. The nickle plating on the bottom is nice and clean, but rough and dirty underneath the plating. I have looked very close and can see nothing. I think it may be a 242 junior, but don't know for sure. It doesn't have the original globe. It has a small bolt on the top instead of a brass nut.

The 200A with the black band is not in perfect shape, it has some surface rust. I had no idea it was a little rare, thats great.

I hope I didn't "hook" anyone, as that's certainly not my intent, I enjoy it and it's a relatively inexpensive way to preserve vintage camping items and enjoy them....I'd bet he was into this or at least interested prior to my postings....If I did hook you...I apologize....JUST SAY NO!

and Dawn....I got some new stuff....not lanterns, but vintage that will go really well with the new trailer...lots of it around, cheap and will really take you back with memories, very era specific.....I'll post a pic when it gets here....

Randy...a plain 242 with no letter would be from 1932-35 and is the first run of single mantled lanterns. Jeremy would be a better resource on some of this stuff. He's the real lantern Guru....Doug

Ohhh, I was hooked years ago. My wife cringes everytime I carry something Coleman home.

She was just complaining about where I keep stuff today. I just have someone to share with now!

I am thinking it does on the side of the tank. I have it out at my shop, I will look and take some pics tomorrow.

OK, my camera is giving me fits so I don't have any pics. But I did bring it home and look at it good. It does not have a sun shine anywhere but on the rest. It is just a plain 242 and on the bottom I took some 3000 grit sandpaper and lightly went over it with a little water and come up with a 3 on the left and a 9 on the right. The nickle coating is really rough on the bottom.

What do ya think?

If it's a plain 242...that makes it Sept. of '33. Doug

I just Picked up a Rough 242 C (1948) at a garage sale for about $1.50 it has the brass fount with the paint in Bad condition - I plan to strip it down and polish the brass - it ain't gonna be a shelf a queen and I'm no purest. Now my question is: does this model run on Gas or coleman fuel?

You can probably run it on unleaded, but white gas or coleman fuel would be better on it in the long run. Others may disagree, but there are still additives in unleaded that aren't all that great in a generator. I know that Rich runs unleaded in all his stuff and it's worked fine. I think the octane is higher on the Coleman fuel, but have nothing to back it up. In a test, we were able to boil water faster using Coleman than reg. gas. Doug
